Ambassador Belal, also Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), was elected by the Conference being held in The Hague on November 25-29, said the Bangladesh Embassy on Wednesday.
The Committee of the Whole serves as the main forum for discussion and consultation on substantive issues that may not yet ripe for decision-making.
The committee strives to reach consensus on these issues and submits its recommendations to the conference for subsequent action.
The CSP is the principal and plenary organ of the OPCW that oversees the implementation of the CWC, promotes its goals, and reviews compliance with the Convention.
It also oversees the activities of the Executive Council and Technical Secretariat of the OPCW and takes important decisions like approving the annual programme and budget, appointing the Director-General, fostering international cooperation for peaceful use of chemistry, etc.
Bangladesh is currently the member of the 41-member Executive Council of the OPCW and served the immediate past Conference of the States Parties as a Vice-Chair.
