The body of a madrasa student, who went missing on Sunday evening, was recovered from a pond in Jashore Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Tanvir Hasan Nishan, 14, son of Khairul of Bhatpara under Sadar upazila.
Nishan was a ninth-grade student at Bhatpara Alia Madrasa.
According to family members, he left home around 7pm on Sunday saying that he was going to a nearby shop but never returned.
Despite searches, he remained missing and his mobile phone was found switched off.
The family said that around 10:30pm, an unidentified person used Nishan’s phone to demand a ransom of Tk 5,000, but the call was abruptly disconnected.

Later, a general diary (GD) was later filed with Kotwali model police station in this connection.
Around 2pm, a local man, while working near the pond, felt something unusual underfoot. Upon further effort, Nishan’s body was found submerged and hidden under stones at the bottom of the pond in Bhatpara area.
Witnesses said his hands and legs were tied with a lungi.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Jashore General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Abul Hasnat, officer-in-charge of Kotwali model police station, said they took the incident very seriously and an investigation was underway to uncover the facts.
