Students from various nursing colleges in Savar and Dhaka staged a second consecutive day of protests on Monday, blocking the Dhaka-Aricha Highway for three hours in response to the death of a fellow student.
Prattay Kumar Sarkar, 30, a first year student at the CRP Nursing College, was fatally injured when a bus of Thikana Paribahan hit him at Yamin Chattar, near the Savar bus stand, on Saturday morning.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, prompting his fellow students to take to the streets in protest.
The protest began around 12:45pm at Shimultola area and continued until 2:45pm, severely disrupting traffic along the busy highway.
The blockade caused a 10-kilometer traffic jam stretching from Hemayetpur to Nabinagar, leaving commuters stranded and facing extreme hardship.
Earlier on Sunday, students blocked the highway for an hour and a half, demanding the arrest of the bus driver, the suspension of highway transport services, appropriate compensation, and the implementation of safer roads.
On information, police quickly arrived at the scene and urged the students to lift the blockade, but the protesters refused to budge.
Subsequently, with the intervention of Upazila Executive Officer Abu Bakar Sarkar, a meeting was arranged between the district administration, highway transport owners, and the students. During the discussions, assurances were given that the bus driver would be arrested.
Following the discussions, the students agreed to lift the blockade, and normal traffic flow was restored.
Jewel Mia, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station, said efforts are underway to arrest the bus driver, with a resolution expected by Sunday.
