A Dhaka court has barred Rapid Action Battalion 2 (RAB) Additional Police Superintendent (Promote) Uttam Kumar Biswas from leaving the country amid allegations of corruption.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad Aslam Jaglul Hossain gave the order after Anti-Corruption Commission Assistant Director Ruhul Haque appealed for the ban on Thursday.
Lawyer Mahmud Hossain Jahangir appeared on behalf of the ACC.
The petition said that an investigation had been launched into allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income through various irregularities and corruption against Uttam Kumar Biswas, which is currently ongoing.
In the meantime, a notice has been issued to Uttam and his wife, asking for a statement of assets.
Analysis of various records obtained from various banks and other institutions during the investigation showed that the RAB Addl SP is closing down numerous accounts and withdrawing all the money after receiving the ACC notice, which appears to be suspicious.
Uttam has not been cooperating in any way since the beginning of the investigation, but rather has been trying to hinder the investigation by providing false and misleading information at various times and wasting time unnecessarily, the petition also said.
It has been learned from secret sources during the investigation that Uttam Kumar is planning to flee the country after closing all his accounts. There is a strong possibility that the investigation will be hampered if he flees abroad, therefore, a travel ban on him is absolutely necessary, the petition added.
At the end of the hearing, the court ordered a travel ban on Uttam Kumar.
