The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has expressed deep concern over the fire that broke out at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Saturday.
In a statement on Sunday, DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed urged the authorities concerned to conduct a high-powered investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
He said ports and airports are vital for trade and the economy, stressing the need for effective measures to strengthen fire safety and firefighting capacity at such critical points.
Taskeen said that HSIA is extensively used by the business community for import and export activities alongside passenger services.
He cautioned that such unexpected incidents could create insecurity among local and foreign entrepreneurs, harm Bangladesh’s global trade image and threaten overall economic stability.
The DCCI chief cautioned that the fire could shake business confidence and disrupt trade operations.
He called on the authorities to promptly assess the extent of losses and ensure fair compensation for affected businesspersons.
Taskeen also urged the government to consider keeping cargo operations active during weekends to ensure smooth business continuity.
He emphasised the importance of providing medical treatment to the injured and wished them a speedy recovery.
