Five individuals arrested during an anti-drug operation at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital have been handed various jail terms and fines by the Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court of the Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Talebur Rahman, head of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, confirmed the development.
According to DMP’s Detective Branch in Ramna, based on secret information, a team conducted the operation around 7:30 pm on Thursday (Mar 12) under Shahbagh Police Station. The five arrested are: Md. Ibrahim (32), Md. Shakhawat Hossain Niyon (29), Md. Al Amin (42), Md. Niyon (19), and Md. Rezoan Sheikh (50). During the raid, authorities recovered 15 yaba tablets, cannabis wrapped in paper, a pair of scissors, 10 pieces of foil paper, three gas lighters, five bottle corks, and three cigarettes.
The arrestees were later presented before the Ramna Special Metropolitan Magistrate Court, which sentenced four of them to 15 days’ rigorous imprisonment, while one received a fine of BDT 500.
DMP noted that offenses such as theft, snatching, drug possession, eve-teasing, and illegal street occupation are being promptly addressed through summary trials in Dhaka, ensuring speedy justice for victims. The police reaffirmed their commitment to strict action against lawbreakers.
