Freedom fighter and Awami League advisory committee member advocate Rahmat Ali passed away on Sunday morning at a Dhaka hospital.
He was 76.
Ali breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital around 7:30am, the ruling party said in a press release.
The former member of Parliament from Gazipur-3 constituency had served as the state minister for LGRD when the Awami League returned to power through the 7th national election.
Ruling party leaders have issued separate messages mourning his death.
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar expressed deep shock over the death of the former MP.
Ali is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
