Torrential rains for two days since Friday inundated most of the roads, educational institutions, government and private offices and commercial establishments in Khulna city, paralysing normal life people.
Khulna Technical Training Center, Khulna Women's Technical Training Center, several roads, homesteads and fish enclosures in Teligati and North Bonikpara areas have been submerged.
Rainwater entered houses, education institutions in low-lying areas, causing woes to residents and disrupting academic activities.
The entrance road and playgrounds of Khulna Government Teacher Training College and Higher Secondary Teachers' Institute were seen flooded on Saturday morning. The same is the case with Khulna Technical Training Center and Women's Training Center.
Knee-deep water has accumulated on the playground of Govt Laboratory High School, Prativamoye pre-cadet school, Sher-e-Bangla Road, Nirala, Tutpara, Moulvipara, Taltala of the city.
Locals said they have to suffer due to lack of proper drainage system, regular cleaning of drains and due to the accumulation of garbage in the drains, leading to water logging.
In the last five years, the level of suffering has increased, they said adding when there is heavy rains, the roads, houses, ponds, fish enclosures, educational institutions are all submerged.
Abdur Rahim of Teligati village said, "The rainwater remains stagnant due to lack of drainage system. This happens every year when it rains. It rained yesterday but the water will stay a few more days.”
Abu Hanif, acting headmaster of Government Laboratory High School, said, "Every year during monsoon, when there is a little heavy rain, water accumulates inside our school. Due to heavy rain, water often enters the classrooms, submerges field, causing suffering to students, teachers and staff.”
