A man died after jumping from a moving autorickshaw in an attempt to save his mentally ill wife in Kalmakanda upazila of Netrokona on Saturday.
The deceased Asar Uddin, 40, was a resident of Battala village under Kharnai Union. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the Lengura Bazar area, police said.
According to locals, Asar Uddin was taking his wife Shahina Akhter, 30, who is mentally ill, to his father’s house in Kebalpur village. They were travelling in a battery-run autorickshaw along with Asar's elder brother Monir Hossain.
While passing through Lengura Bazar, Shahina suddenly jumped off the moving vehicle. In a desperate attempt to rescue her, Asar immediately jumped after her but fell hard on the road, suffering serious injuries.
He was rushed to the Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Mohammad Lutfur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kalmakanda Police Station, said police visited the spot and the hospital soon after receiving the information.
“Legal procedures have been completed and the body was handed over to the family,” he said.
The incident has left the local community in mourning, with many expressing shock and sorrow over the untimely death and the husband's brave attempt to save his wife.
"The sacrifice Asar Uddin made for his wife's safety is truly rare," said a neighbour.
