Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, a leading private bank, has regained control of its verified official Facebook page, approximately 12 hours after it was compromised by hackers early Friday morning.
The bank’s public relations division confirmed the recovery, stating that control was successfully restored around 4:00 PM on Friday (October 3).
The Head of Public Relations, Nazrul Islam told UNB, "The page was hacked in the morning. After continuous communication with the Facebook authorities throughout the day, we were able to get the control back. The page is now being operated normally."
After the breach, the hacker group, identified as 'Team MS 47OX', changed the page’s profile and cover photos to display their own logo.
The group reportedly posted a message demanding the reinstatement of S. Alam-linked and terminated bank employees, though the post was deleted shortly thereafter.
The hacking incident is considered significant in light of recent widespread internal actions at Islami Bank. The bank has been engaged in a major restructuring, including the dismissal of over 400 employees and the designation of nearly 5,000 officers as OSD (Officer on Special Duty).
The timing of the cyber intrusion, coupled with the hacker's specific demand for reinstatement, suggests a potential link to the ongoing internal turmoil and job cuts at the institution.
Bangladesh Bank has instructed Islami Bank to cut operational costs and reduce the large volume of defaulted loans.
The central bank also instructed Islami Bank to review unethically appointed over 8340 employees during the 7 years by S Alam. In these 7 years around Tk10,000 crore was spent behind the inefficient employees, said an Islami Bank official.
Bangladesh Bank’s investigation into the largest Islami Bank found that huge expenditure increased during S Alam occupied period in Islami Bank, which caused loss instead of profit in the bank operation, sources said.
