Losing his father – the only earning member of his family – to a road accident at a very young age, Jahid Hasan Jony, 18, had no choice but to step up for his family.
Despite all the hardship in life caused by poverty, Jony cracked the the MBBS admission test and got the opportunity to get admission in Shaheed M Mansur Ali Medical College in Sirajganj by becoming 3801st out of 135,813 students who participated this year
“It was indomitable will power that brought me this success. I’ve continued my studies despite facing financial constraints. It was my father’s dream that his son would become a doctor,” Jony – the son of late Monirul Islam Tipu and Jorina Begum of Thakurgaon’s Ranisankail upazila – said while talking to UNB’s Thakurgaon correspondent.
“My father died when I was in school. I needed to do something at this very young age for my family. So, I started working as a farmer," he went on saying.
“It was very difficult for me to continue studying while working as a farmer at the same time to provide for my family. However, I was able to make my father's dream a reality by adapting to all the hardships,” Jony added.
After passing SSC from Ranisankail Pilot High School and HSC from Pirganj Government College, he was admitted to coaching for the MBBS admission exam in Rangpur with the help of an elder brother.
He used to travel back and forth from Thakurgaon to Rangpur to manage both his study and work.
After tackling all hardships, he finally got the opportunity to get admission in the medical college by getting 72 out 100 in the entrance exam.
While talking to UNB, Jorina Begum, Jony’s mother said Jony is the eldest of their two children. "We have nothing except for a few hundred acres of land. My son studied very hard. At the same time, he used to run the family by doing all the farming.”
“He had a dream of becoming a doctor from a very early age. And now he got the chance to study medicine. He worked hard to fulfill his dream,” Jorina Begum said.
Mostafizur Rahman Mostaq, mayor of Ranisankail Municipality, said Jony worked very hard after his father's death. Today he succeeded. "We’ll be supporting them in every possible way in the coming days," he added.
In this regard, Ranisankail Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sohel Sultan Zulkar Nain Kabir Steve said: "This is not only a story of inspiration but of struggle as well. If you have the will to study, it is possible to continue it in any way. Jony proved that.”
He also pledged his support for Jony and his family.
