A record Tk 12,93,72,220 was collected from the donation boxes at the historic Pagla Mosque in Kishoreganj, officials said after 14 hours of calculations on Saturday.
In addition to cash, the mosque also received foreign currency and gold jewelry.
The donation boxes were opened at 7:00 am Saturday in the presence of Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner and Pagla Mosque Management Committee President Fauzia Khan, and Police Superintendent Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury, and the cash was brought to the mosque’s upper floor for counting.
Nearly 500 people, including 340 madrasa students, 100 bank staff, 34 mosque committee members, and 20 law enforcement officials, spent hours counting the money.
Mohammad Ali Harechi, Assistant General Manager of Rupali Bank in Kishoreganj, confirmed the total around 8:00 pm.
This year, 10 donation boxes and three tanks were opened, compared to 11 boxes opened in April 2025, which collected Tk 9,17,80,687.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, funds were used to help 80 volunteers at Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital.
According to a legend, the mosque, over 250 years old, was originally a shrine of a spiritual saint who was locally known as ‘Pagol Sadhok’.
The donations are believed to fulfill the wishes of those who give, attracting people of all religions from near and far.
Visitors donate cash, gold, silver, livestock, and even foreign currency.
Every Friday, large crowds come for prayers and donations.
Pagla Masjid donations cross record-breaking Tk 9 crore mark
Today, this mosque stands on 3.88 acres along the Narsunda River and is one of Kishoreganj’s key historic sites.
The mosque committee says they plan to build an Islamic Complex at the site at a cost of Tk 115 crore, which will accommodate 30,000 worshippers for prayers.
Donations from the mosque are used for the upkeep of the mosque, support for other mosques, madrasas, orphanages, and social welfare projects.
