A Faridpur tribunal on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to jail until death for killing his wife by setting her on fire over dowry in 2020.
Faridpur Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Shamima Parveen handed down the punishment.
The condemned convict is Rashed Molla, 30 of Ghoradah Bazar in Sadar upazila of the district.
The tribunal also fined him Tk 50,000. The court also sentenced him three years imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000, in another section of the case, in default to suffer one year more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Rashed married to Jotsna Begum, 21, daughter of Syed Matubbar of Dangi village in Sadar upazila of the district in 2019. Since then he used to put pressure on his in-law’s over dowry.
The family of Jotsna also provided Tk 50,000 to Rashed. He also arranged more money by selling gold jewelry of Jotsna.
On July 16, 2020, Rashed again demanded Tk 50,000 as dowry. When Jotsna failed to meet the demand, an altercation ensued between them.
At one point, he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
She was first taken to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital and later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as her condition was critical but she died on the way to the hospital on the following day.
Jalil Sheikh, elder brother of Jotsna, filed a murder case with Faridpur Kotwali Police Station.
