A newborn girl is in critical condition after her abdomen was cut during a C-section performed at Saudi-Bangla Private Hospital in Faridpur.

The incident occurred on Saturday, when Mursheda Begum, a resident of Char Kamalapur area, underwent the procedure under the care of gynecologist Dr. Shirin Akhter.

Mursheda Begum's husband, Naib Ali, reported that shortly after the birth, the family noticed blood oozing from the newborn’s navel area. Despite informing the hospital authorities, their initial concerns were ignored, he said. As the bleeding intensified, Dr. Shirin was called in to stitch the cut near the navel.

Naib Ali recounted his experience, saying, “They handed my child to me. After a while, I saw blood coming out from the side of the navel. There was a significant cut, and the body was turning blue. When we informed the hospital authorities, they initially ignored it. Later, when the bleeding increased, the doctor was called in, and she stitched the cut area with two stitches.”

The newborn was first taken to Dr. Zahed Memorial Children's Hospital before being transferred to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning. The baby is currently receiving treatment in the children’s ward.

Professor Dr. Parvez, head of the pediatric department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital, noted that while the baby is receiving treatment, it is too early to provide a definitive prognosis, with a critical 72-hour observation period underway.

Dr. Shirin Akhter described the incident as unexpected, stating, "During the operation, I saw that the baby's position was not right. Moreover, the baby was entangled with the umbilical cord. A part got cut and was later stitched."

Md. Shahidul Islam Likhon, chairman of Saudi Bangla Hospital, said, "It was an unexpected incident. I came to the hospital after hearing the news and inquired about the baby. All necessary measures have been taken to ensure the baby's recovery."

SI Shamim Hasan of Faridpur Kotwali Police Station said, "Based on the complaint, we went to the hospital and inquired about the baby. Necessary action will be taken after investigation."
