The body of a tea seller was recovered from a pond in Harijanpalli area of Sherpur, 40 hours after he was reported as missing.
Police recovered the body around 2:30pm on Saturday.
The deceased is Abdul Motaleb aka Haji, 52, son of Abed Ali of Sojborkhila area near Harijanpalli.
He went missing on Thursday after leaving his home around 9:30pm.
According to police and locals, Motaleb ran a tea stall in front of his house near Harijanpalli.
After closing the shop on Thursday night, he could not be found.
His family searched for him for two days but found no trace.
On Saturday afternoon, after the rain stopped, locals spotted his body in a pond inside Harijanpalli and informed the family and police.
No visible injuries were found on his body, though eyewitnesses noticed slight marks near his face.
The deceased’s son, Sajid Mia, said, “I believe he was murdered and then his body was dumped. I demand a full investigation and justice for his killing. Those responsible should be punished.”
Zubaidul Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station, said, “The body has been sent to Sherpur District Hospital morgue for autopsy. The investigation is ongoing, and the exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report.”
Md. Mizanur Rahman Bhunya, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration & Finance), visited the site.
