A street boy was killed after being attacked with a piece of glass during a dispute over drug use in the capital’s Tejgaon area on Friday night.
The victim, identified as Moyejul alias Kalu, 16, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 9:45 pm in a critically injured condition, where doctors on duty declared him dead.
According to Amin, a friend of the victim, the altercation took place near the rail crossing in front of Hotel Sheraton, where several street children had gathered. At one stage, a quarrel broke out between Moyejul and another street boy, Hamidul, over drug use.
During the argument, Hamidul allegedly struck Moyejul on the left side of his neck with a piece of glass, leaving him seriously injured. Amin and other street children rushed him to the hospital, but doctors said he had already died.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at DMCH, confirmed the death citing doctors. He said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue.
The accused, Hamidul, is currently in police custody, and Tejgaon Police Station has been informed about the incident, he added.
