A tea shop owner ended his life on Friday in Jatrabari, unable to bear humiliation from creditors over unpaid loans.
The victim, Md. Monir, 50, committed suicide around noon at his shop near Dania Sarai Mosque area.
His family originally hails from Purbo Charkali in Bhola Sadar, but they were living in a rented house in Dania, Jatrabari.
Monir’s son, Miraj, said that his father hanged himself with a rope from a fan in the shop.
“We found him unconscious and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” he added.

Miraj also calimed that his father had borrowed money from several local people and these creditors reportedly came to the shop to demand repayment and insulted him, which left him mentally distressed leading to the suicide.
Inspector Md. Faruk, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, said, “Monir’s body has been kept in the morgue and the matter has been reported to Jatrabari police station.”
