Two people, including a woman, were killed and five others injured when a tractor hit an auto-van in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur on Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Piari Begum, 60, wife of Dula Mia of Gangarampur village in the upazila, and Solaiman, 70, of Mahadipur village in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district. Police said the injured were admitted to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex.
Witnesses said Piari Begum and several neighbours were travelling to Pirganj Bazar in her husband Dula Mia’s auto-van this afternoon. When the vehicle reached Sonakandar Kalar Hat, a Mahindra tractor loaded with bricks rammed into it, killing Piari Begum on the spot.
Local residents rescued the injured and took them to the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Solaiman dead.
Upon receiving the information, police visited the spot and recovered the bodies. The tractor driver fled the scene soon after the accident.

Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pirganj Police Station, said the bodies have been handed over to the families.
A case is being processed in connection with the incident, and the injured are undergoing treatment.
