BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday alleged the government is to blame for the alleged corruption and misdeeds of former Army Chief General Aziz Ahmed and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
Speaking at a discussion, he also said the government has taken the country to such a dire condition that the media are depicting numerous pictures of corruption by a former police chief.

“You (PM) nurtured him (Benazir). You made him the IGP even after he was sanctioned (by the US) long ago,” Fakhrul said.
Similarly, Fakhrul said a former army chief has been sanctioned now for indulging in looting, stealing and obstructing the election in Bangladesh.
“Is this only their (Aziz’s and Benazir’s) responsibility? This is the responsibility of this government who is staying in power by force,” he said.
The BNP leader also said the government should step down taking responsibility for the misdeeds of the former military chief and IGP.
“Not just one Aziz and one Benazir. You have fostered countless persons like Aziz and Benazir who are plundering public money,” he observed.

Fakhrul also said the ruling party leaders and followers are looting public money like the notorious Borgis (the horsemen of the Maratha Empire who indulged in large-scale plundering in the Bengal region during the 17th century). Their only job is to plunder the assets of Bangladesh and amass wealth abroad through siphoning money overseas, he alleged.
BNP organised the discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the 43rd death anniversary of its founder Ziaur Rahman. The party has taken elaborate programmes to observe the day with due respect on Thursday.
Fakhrul said BNP along with 63 other opposition parties have long been demanding in unison for holding fair a national election under a neutral administration.
He said the government is unwilling to hold the election under an impartial administration as it knows very well it will not get even 10 percent of seats in credible polls.

In such a situation, the BNP leader called upon the people from all walks of life to get united and wake up to intensify the ongoing movement for the restoration of democracy.
He also recalled the sacrifices of the BNP leaders and workers in the movement, saying it would not go in vain.
Speaking at the programme, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas said Ziaur Rahman gave Awami League scope to do politics by introducing multi-party democracy after annulling one-party rule Baksal.
He lamented that Awami League leaders are now making derogatory comments about Ziaur Rahman and his widow Khaleda Zia.
Abbas said many people thought the BNP would be destroyed through the murder of its founder Zia. “No one can destroy this party. BNP must sustain for thousand years to protect the independence and sovereignty of this country.”
