Mohamed Salah has announced he will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the current season, bringing an end to a successful spell at Anfield.
The 33-year-old Egypt international confirmed the decision in a video message on his social media accounts, saying, “Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.”
Salah, who joined Liverpool from AS Roma in June 2017, had signed a new two-year contract with the club in April 2025. However, he will depart on a free transfer after both sides reached an agreement regarding his future.
The forward has endured a relatively difficult campaign by his own standards, scoring 10 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions so far. He is on course to record his lowest seasonal goal tally since joining the club.
In December, following a 3-3 draw against Leeds, Salah told reporters he felt “thrown under the bus” by the club and indicated that his relationship with head coach Arne Slot had deteriorated. Speculation over a potential January exit intensified, though he later returned to the squad after participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.
It remains unclear where Salah will play next season or which club he may join.
Liverpool said Salah chose to make his decision public early out of respect for supporters and to ensure transparency regarding his future.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Salah said his years on Merseyside had profoundly shaped his life, recalling experiences including the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent death of teammate Diogo Jota.
“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, a history and a spirit,” he said, expressing gratitude to teammates and everyone associated with the club.
Since arriving at Anfield, Salah has played a central role in Liverpool’s resurgence, helping the team win two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two EFL Cups and the Community Shield.
He has scored 255 goals in 435 appearances for Liverpool, making him the club’s third-highest all-time scorer behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
Salah has also won the Premier League Golden Boot four times and been named Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year on three occasions — in 2018, 2022 and 2025.
