A wave of Russian ballistic missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine early Friday, injuring at least three people, according to officials.
Loud explosions were reported in Kyiv, where falling debris ignited fires in several areas as air defenses attempted to shoot down the incoming threats, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city administration.
Local authorities confirmed that three people were injured and urged the public to take shelter. “Our air defense units are working hard, but we must also look out for each other — stay safe,” Tkachenko posted on Telegram.
The attack caused damage in various districts, and emergency crews were active at several sites.
In the Solomyanskyi district, a blaze erupted on the 11th floor of a 16-story residential building. Emergency responders evacuated three people from the apartment, and rescue efforts continued. Another fire was reported at a metal warehouse.
Tkachenko also noted that metro tracks between two Kyiv stations were damaged, though no injuries or fires were reported there.
In Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region, a Shahed drone exploded near an apartment building, blowing out windows and doors, said Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, head of the regional military administration. He also reported ballistic missile blasts on the city’s outskirts.
The nighttime assault came just hours after former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested it might be best to allow Ukraine and Russia to “fight for a while” before seeking peace, a statement diverging from his usual calls to end the nearly three-year conflict.
Trump made the remarks during a meeting with Germany’s new chancellor, who appealed to him as a global figure with the power to influence Russian President Vladimir Putin and bring an end to the violence.
