Bangladesh seeks Ireland’s active participation in conference on Rohingyas
Bangladesh has sought active participation of Ireland in the upcoming international conference on Rohingyas and called for appropriate international pressure on Myanmar for a durable solution in this regard, considering the context of the present conflict there.
Bangladesh also requested Ireland for facilitation of visas for Bangladeshi students aspiring to pursue higher studies in Ireland.
The issues were discovered when Ambassador of Ireland to Bangladesh (based in New Delhi) Kevin Kelly met Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the latter’s office on Monday.
The Ambassador lauded Bangladesh for sheltering the forcibly displaced Rohingyas and reaffirmed Irish support in pursuit of finding a sustainable solution to the crisis.
Honorary Consul of Ireland in Bangladesh Masud Khan accompanied the Irish Ambassador in the meeting.
Ireland keen to support Bangladesh in democratic transition
The Irish envoy visited Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar on Tuesday.
Both sides also exchanged views on cooperation in trade including GSP+, development, media freedom, as well as next general elections in Bangladesh, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Irish Ambassador congratulated the Foreign Adviser on his new role and responsibility.
Underscoring the student-led mass uprising of July-August 2024 as historic, he conveyed the readiness of the Irish government in extending necessary cooperation to the Interim Government of Bangladesh.
Thanking the Irish government for its intended support, the Foreign Adviser highlighted the reform initiatives of the interim government.
