SUST residential students demand hall provost's resignation
Residential students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) staged a protest on Thursday night, demanding the resignation of the Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall provost.
Around 8pm, the students of the female dormitory called on provost Zafrin Ahmed Liza to apprise her of their problems about accommodation. But the students alleged that the hall provost misbehaved with them.
The agitated students immediately staged a protest at the hall and then outside the official residence of SUST Vice-Chancellor, demanding provost Zafrin’s resignation and public apology, as well as resolution of their long-standing issues.

Silsila, a cultural group of Dhaka University, held a Qwwali programme on Thursday protesting the attack on a Qwwali event at TSC.
They performed different Bangla and UrducQwwali songs and recited poems.
After the programme, the organizers declared to stage Qwwali programmes at TSC of Dhaka University every Thursday.

At least two activists of People Activists Coalition (PAC) were injured as police swung batons on their protest rally in front of National Museum on Thursday.
PAC organized the rally in front of the National Museum around 4 pm protesting the attack of Chhatra League on Qwwali Mahfil at TSC on Wednesday.
Police used batons to try to disperse the rally soon after the organisers opened the banner of the programme, said Ratul Mohammad, one of the organizing bodies of People Activist Coalition (PAC).

Pro-AL Blue Panel sweeps DU dean election
Blue panel, a panel of pro-Awami League teachers, swept the Dhaka University dean election on Thursday.
The dean election of Dhaka University (DU) was held at Nawab Ali Chowdhury senate building and DU Treasurer Prof Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed announced the results at DU Club in the afternoon.
Prof Md Rahmat Ullah and Prof Zillur Rahman of Blue Panel were declared elected deans of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Science respectively before the election as no one from other panels contested the election.

The other Blue Panel deans are Dr. Mohammad Abdul Bashir of Arts Faculty, Prof. Abdus Samad of Science Faculty, Dr. Mohammad Abdul Moin of Business Faculty, Dr. Ziaur Rahman of Social Science Faculty, Dr. AKM Hasan of Biological Sciences Faculty Dr. Shites Chandra Bachar of the Pharmacy Faculty, Dr. Hafiz Mohammad Hasan Babu of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
The voting began at 9:00 am and continued till 1:00pm.
The elected deans will serve for the next two years.
DU alumni centenary reunion prog deferred
Dhaka University Alumni Association (DUAA) has decided to defer its centenary reunion programme in the wake of the newly imposed restrictions over the rising Omicron cases of Covid.
The decision to suspend the programme slated for January 13 and 14 was taken as the government has imposed restrictions on public movement and other activities, the association said in a statement.
When the Covid situation eases, the programme will be scheduled again, it said.

On Monday, the Cabinet Division issued a notification imposing restrictions to control the Covid-19 spread that will take effect on January 13.
All kinds of public gatherings, including social programmes, political and religious events will remain suspended until further notice, it said.

Besides, public transport services, including buses, trains and launches, can operate only at half of their capacities while drivers and helpers of all modes of vehicles should have Covid-19 vaccination certificates, said the notice.
Chevron’s scholarship programme for local students continues
As a part of its ongoing annual program for financially disadvantaged and meritorious students, Chevron Bangladesh has awarded scholarships to783 students from 23 educational institutions near the areas of its three gas fields—Bibiyana, Jalalabad and Moulavi Bazar.
According to a Chevron release, about 64 percent of the scholarship recipients are female while 55 scholarships are for students who achieved excellent grades in the 2021 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams.

The average pass rate of Chevron’s scholarship recipients in the 2021 SSC exams was cent percent, compared to the national and Sylhet division averages of 94 percent and 97 percent respectively.
Chevron Bangladesh started the scholarship program with only a small handful of educational institutions nearly two decades ago.
Aside from helping students’ overall academic performance, the company’s quality education support initiative also aims to improve the learning environment of schools near its three gas fields.

In addition to scholarships, Chevron support is provided in the form of additional teaching, computer labs, coaching support and endowment fund for selected schools, school uniforms, sports equipment, furniture, infrastructure, sanitation facilities and potable water.
As a part of the corporate social responsibility initiatives, Chevron seeks to promote long-term human progress through its global social investment areas of focus: economic development, education, and health.
Chevron, the US-based company, operates and holds a 100 percent interest in two onshore production sharing contracts (PSCs) in Bangladesh covering Block 12 (Bibiyana Field) and Blocks 13 and 14 (Jalalabad and Moulavi Bazar fields).
12 DU students get Sitara Parvin Award
Twelve students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University (DU) were on Sunday given ‘Professor Sitara Parvin Award’ for their outstanding results in BSS (Hons.)
MCJ department arranged a prize giving ceremony at Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of Social Science Building on the DU campus.
Chairman of the MCJ department Prof. Dr. Abul Mansur Ahmed presided over the function while Director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Research Institute for Peace and Liberty Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam addressed it.

MCJ department teacher Prof. Dr. Ahaduzzaman Mohammad Ali gave a vote of thanks at the function conducted by its teacher Prof. Robaet Ferdous.
Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman paid tribute to the memory of Prof. Dr. Sitara Parvin, and said she was an honest, sincere and devoted teacher of the university.
The Awardees are: Mili Akter, Ritu Karmokar,Jannatul Islam Ria, Tahura Tabassum Tari, Sumia Zahid, Md. Tariqul Islam, Tipu Sultan, Saidul Islam, Tanha Tasnim Ity, Farhana Akter, Mst. Nusrat Zabin Biva and Sumya Arefin Arni. The students attended their BSS final examination in 2019.
Prof. Dr. Fakrul Alam said, “Sitara Parvin covered different fields of knowledge during her lifetime. I feel proud to be her teacher and colleague.”
Later, he requested students and teachers to make a case study on her works to explore her talent.

Dr. Sitara Parvin, daughter of former President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed and wife of Dr. Ahaduzzaman Mohammad Ali, died in a road accident on June 23, 2005 in the USA.
Other students, teachers and staff of the department were present at the programme.
Decision on educational institutions after meeting with NTAC: Dipu Moni
Education Minister Dipu Moni on Saturday said the decision on how to deal with educational institutions amid the Covid-19 surge will be taken after the ministry’s meeting with the National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) on Covid-19 on Sunday.
The government formed the 17-member national technical advisory committee with independent experts and government representatives in April, 2020 to recommend measures to tackle the pandemic in the country.
“The government, however, doesn’t want to shut the educational institutions now,” she said while talking to reporters after attending the silver jubilee programme of Dhaka Imperial College.
Prof Selim's death: Kuet halls reopen, classes to resume on Jan 9
Residential halls of Khulna Engineering and Technology University (Kuet) reopened on Friday after remaining closed over the unusual death of Prof. Dr Mohammad Selim Hossain.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of Kuet syndicate on Thursday morning, said Pratik Chandra Biswas, president of the teachers' association.
The university administration also announced to hold classes from January 9.

On behalf of the association, the university administration also decided to buy a Sanchayapatra of Taka 10 lakh to give it to Selim's daughter Jannatul Ferdous.
The association also demanded a permanent job in Kuet for Selim's wife according to her educational qualifications.
It also called for starting the judicial process to put those responsible for his death on trial.
JU suspends in-person classes
Jahangirnagar University authorities on Thursday announced suspension of in-person classes for an indefinite period due to rise in Covid-19 cases on the campus.
However, online classes will be held and the dormitories will remain open, said a notice issued by Rahima Kaniz, acting registrar of the university.
Practical classes and examination can be taken in more than one room, the notification mentioned.
The university authorities will take measure to so that students, teachers and staff maintain health guidelines like wearing mask and they will and prevent entry of outsiders, it said.

The Bird Fair which was scheduled to be held on the campus on January 7 has been canceled.
The authorities will make arrangements for isolation of at least four students at a time in the JU halls, it said.
On October 18, last year in-person classes resumed at Jahangirnagar University after a long closure due to Covid-19 situation.
