Awami League candidate Prof AFM Ruhal Haque, a renowned physician of the Subcontinent, is going to fight with BNP candidate cardiologist Dr Md Shahidul Alam for Satkhira-3 constituency. Ishaq Ali from Islami Shashontantra Andolon is also there in the fight from the same constituency.
Now the voters of the constituency are eagerly waiting to see the contest between the two doctors and ultimately who will be the next parliament member after the election on December 30.
This vital constituency encompasses part of Assasuni upazila, Debhata upazila and Kaliganj upazila. It has a total of 3 lakh 87,338 voters, including 91,820 women, from its 20 unions of three upazilas.
Dr AFM Ruhal Haque had been working as Health Minister after his victory in the 2008 Jatiya Sangsad. He was elected parliament member for the second time in the 2014 national election and started working from the same constituency.
Having an FRCS medical degree, Ruhal Haque is the member of the UN Health Organization. He served in different hospitals, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital, National Institute of Traumatology & Orthopedic Rehabilitation and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University throughout his medical career.
A member of the Awami League Advisory Council, Ruhal Haque now serves patients at Trauma Centre in the capital and goes aboard to serve patients there.
On the other hand, Dr Md Shahidul Alam is currently serving as a cardiologist at Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar.
A member of Satkhira district BNP executive council, Alam is going to contest the national election for the first time with BNP ticket.
Krishna Das, a resident of Assasuni upazila, said, “We’re a little bit confused to choose the one from the two famous doctors in our constituency. But present MP AFM Ruhal Haque has worked extensively for the development of the locality.”
Satkhira district Awami League general secretary and upazila parishad chairman Nazrul Islam said Ruhal Haque is the exact example of carrying out extensive development in the district.
He hoped that people will vote for the Boat again to continue the development trend.
Dr Md Shahidul Alam, meanwhile, alleged he cannot carry out election campaign freely as police are arresting their leaders and activists every day, and urged the administration not to harassment his followers.
