A probe has also been ordered against Vice Chancellor Prof Yogesh Tyagi, a statement by India's Education Ministry said on Wednesday.
"The President of India, in his capacity as Visitor of the University, on consideration of facts and material available on record, has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of dereliction of duties and lack of commitment and devotion to duty against him," the statement said.
Delhi University pro-VC Professor PC Joshi has been asked by the Ministry to officiate as the vice chancellor till the probe against Prof Tyagi is complete.
The allegations have been levelled by the Ministry after a recent row between the VC and his deputy over appointments. While on leave recently, Prof Tyagi had "illegally" removed Prof Joshi as pro-VC and appointed Prof Geeta Bhatt in his place.
