Market mismanagement behind the rise of egg price
The price of broiler chicken eggs in the markets around Dhaka have soared to tk 170-180 (Tk 14-15/piece) per dozen in a span of a week.
Local chicken eggs are also being sold at Tk 220-230 per dozen in some places around the city.
Market experts and people involved with the egg market say mismanagement in the market is responsible for such an instability in egg prices.
Alam, president of Baridhara Notun Bazar Owners Association, told UNB, "I think the price of eggs is increasing repeatedly due to market mismanagement. Mismanagement of supply and lack of oversight are responsible for creating unstable conditions in the market. The reason behind such frequent surge in product prices should be identified.”

He said the concerned agency should play an effective role in controlling this frequent surge in price of products in the market.
“Otherwise, the rate at which the price of eggs is increasing cannot be controlled,” Alam said.
Nadeem, a customer at Gulshan kitchen market, told UNB that there is a weakness in the market monitoring system, as a result, the traders are increasing the price frequently.
He also urged the concerned agency to take effective action in this regard.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Poultry Association (BPA), an association of local farmers producing eggs and chickens, has called for coordination in the market management to ensure fairness of the price.
BPA President Sumon Hawlader told UNB, "Monitoring of the market has to be strengthened. The price of egg and chicken should be adjusted at a reasonable rate keeping the cost of production in mind.”
“In this way, market conditions will be normal. The government has to take steps to ensure that no syndicate can create instability. Otherwise, it will be difficult to control the price of eggs,” he said.
According to Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) the price of broiler chicken eggs stood at Tk 140-150 per dozen last week, reflecting a significant 10 percent surge compared to the week before.

According to the Bangladesh Egg Producers Association, the country requires between 35 and 40 million eggs per day to meet demand. And the majority of the eggs are sourced from domestic producers.
The Department of Livestock reports that over the last 10 fiscal years, the nation's egg production has more than doubled. The country produced 1,017 crores of eggs in 2013–14, and 2,338 crores of eggs in 2022–23.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim told UNB, "According to the survey of our Livestock Department, it costs more than Tk 10.50 to produce an egg. Even If we take other costs and profit into consideration, it seems to me that the price of an egg should not be fixed at more than Tk 12.”
“If Tk 12 per egg is set, the producers will benefit. Apart from this, if someone tries to create instability in the market, the authorities will take necessary action under the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.”

Regarding whether the ministry will fix the price, Rezaul Karim said, "It is not a matter of fixing the price. Earlier, in 2010, there was an issue of fixing the price of chicks. In that case, the court questioned whether the ministry could fix the price in this way.”
Meanwhile, the government is also considering importing eggs from outside to bring stability to the egg market.
Responding to a question regarding egg import, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said at an event on Sunday morning that the Commerce Ministry cannot import eggs without the cooperation of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
“The decision to import eggs will be taken only after the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock gives a green signal.”

However, when asked about the commerce minister's statement, the livestock minister said, "We will consider the issue of importing eggs in a different way."
“Whether the Commerce Ministry will consider this issue independently or not is up to them. I think, with the current production rate of eggs in the country, there will be no need for imports if we can ensure proper management of the market.”
On fixing the price of eggs, the commerce minister said that if the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock decides the market price for eggs, then the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection will be conducting raids to ensure control of the price of eggs.
With the egg market suddenly unstable, the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection are already conducting raids in various warehouses in the capital and imposing fines, he said.

In the EU’s inflation crisis, the humble egg takes the cake
The humble egg has become a star performer for all the wrong reasons as inflation has hit households across the European Union extremely hard over the year.
The EU's statistical agency Eurostat announced Friday that the average price of an egg — that important staple for poor families and gourmet cooks alike — had risen by 30% over the year to January 2023, becoming a symbol of how the cost of living has hit everyone in the 27-nation bloc.
Even if the latest inflation figures show that annual inflation in the 20-nation eurozone has started to decline to 8.5% in February, the sector of food, alcohol and tobacco continued to rise and stood at 15%.

And then, eggs outperform just about all. Two years ago, egg inflation still stood at a lean 1%, rising to 7% the year after before reaching 30% in February.
Egg prices were whipped up the most in the Czech Republic, rising 85% over the year, followed closely by two other central European nations — Hungary (80%) and Slovakia (79%). Germany and Luxembourg stood at the other end, with both experiencing a relatively lower increase of 18%.
In the United States, egg prices have surged over the past year because of the ongoing bird flu outbreak and the highest inflation in decades. The national average retail price of a dozen eggs hit $4.25 in December, up from $1.79 a year earlier, according to the latest government data.

NDCRP fines 3 wholesalers for manipulating egg price
The National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection (NDCRP) on Saturday fined Tk 4.5 lakh three egg aroth (wholesaler) at Baipile in Ashulia after finding evidence of illegal profiteering.
Earlier egg wholesalers used to earn Tk0.20 per egg. Now they are making a profit of Tk2.70 per egg by creating a crisis. By holding the consumers' hostage, the traders are making a hefty profit per egg.
On Saturday, the NDCRP in a raid found evidence of illegal profit-making at three egg wholesalers at Baipile in Ashulia. A fine of Tk 4.5 lakh has been realized on three egg traders.
The operation was conducted led by Abdul Jabbar Mondol, head of Dhaka district office of NDCRP and assistant director of the directorate Md. Hasanuzzaman.
Abdul Jabbar told UNB that most of the egg traders are not preserving the cash memo of the purchase. Not giving cash memo of sale. No price list either. Eggs are being priced based on demand rather than purchase price.

It can be seen from their cash memos and documents that the purchase price of each egg was Tk9.40 on August 7 and sold at Tk9.60 at a profit of 0.20 paisa only.
After 10 days the picture was different. On August 17, the buying price of each egg was Tk9.10 and the selling price was Tk11.80. In this case, the profit for each egg is Tk2.70 , which is unusual.
Thus, for the crime of increasing the price of eggs through manipulation, Asif's egg Aroth (traders) was fined Tk 1.0 lakh, SJ Agro egg aroth fined Tk 1.0 lakh and Faisal Enterprise was fined Tk 2.5 lakh.

Egg Diet For Weight Loss: Does It Work?
When it comes to dieting, salads, quinoa and detox shakes come to mind as staples for weight loss. Normally, food with high fiber content and low fat are favoured as they are low on calories and help to increase metabolism. The intention is to burn fat, therefore sugar, fat and anything fried is highly avoided. What if we told you there was an ingredient out there that could help with that, but isn’t a chore to consume? Believe it or not, eggs aren’t only used for bodybuilding diets; they have fat loss properties that almost put them on par with other dietary staples. Here is how the egg diet can help with weight loss.
What is the Egg Diet?
The first thing to note about the egg diet is that despite its health benefits, its portion should be comparable to what’s seen on the food pyramid scale. Dairy products and meat are almost at the top of said pyramid, which means that the serving size should be one of the least out of all the ingredients for a well balanced diet. Still, eggs should be a core component of your diet, specifically chicken eggs due to being low on calories and carbohydrates while packing an impressive amount of protein. Although eggs are beneficial for attaining muscle mass, it is still safe to consume the ingredient daily for its weight-loss benefits.

While it is possible to go on an “egg only” diet, it would be difficult to supplement your body with other critical nutrients like Vitamins, Carbohydrates and even fat. Therefore going down this route is an unsafe risk not worth taking. Like any ingredient-focused diet, constantly consuming one particular ingredient can get boring after a while, which is where eggs can really come into their own.
From poached to boiled or scrambled, eggs have some of the most diverse ways to be prepared which can be an incentive to switch up the menu everyday while still consuming the recommended amount of eggs. The diet is traditionally run for only two weeks, and restricts all food consumption to only three meals a day - which means no snacking!
Read Milk Tea Vs. Black Tea Vs. Green Tea: Which is the healthiest option?
Purpose Of The Egg Diet
It would be perfectly normal to question the point of an Egg diet if the risks are this intimidating and that there are possibly safer diets to commit to when intending to lose fat. The main purpose of this diet is to shock the body and break a plateau you might be on when losing weight. Once the body is conditioned to consume only the healthy contents of a diet, it tends to slow down in terms of metabolism, which is where the stint of the egg diet comes in handy.
The small window of time you have to enjoy the egg-focused diet is meant to heighten your overall fat and protein intake, while reducing the variety of carbohydrates you are allowed to take. You aren’t sworn off carbohydrates like a full ketogenic diet or Atkins, but it will dramatically restrict your choices in order to shock your body into a calorie and carbohydrate deficit.
