Apple to pay $95 million to settle lawsuit accusing Siri of eavesdropping
Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the privacy-minded company of deploying its virtual assistant Siri to eavesdrop on people using its iPhone and other trendy devices.
The proposed settlement filed Tuesday in an Oakland, California, federal court would resolve a 5-year-old lawsuit revolving around allegations that Apple surreptitiously activated Siri to record conversations through iPhones and other devices equipped with the virtual assistant for more than a decade.
The alleged recordings occurred even when people didn't seek to activate the virtual assistant with the trigger words, “Hey, Siri." Some of the recorded conversations were then shared with advertisers in an attempt to sell their products to consumers more likely to be interested in the goods and services, the lawsuit asserted.
The allegations about a snoopy Siri contradicted Apple's long-running commitment to protect the privacy of its customers — a crusade that CEO Tim Cook has often framed as a fight to preserve “a fundamental human right.”
Apple isn't acknowledging any wrongdoing in the settlement, which still must be approved by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White. Lawyers in the case have proposed scheduling a Feb. 14 court hearing in Oakland to review the terms.

If the settlement is approved, tens of millions of consumers who owned iPhones and other Apple devices from Sept. 17, 2014, through the end of last year could file claims. Each consumer could receive up to $20 per Siri-equipped device covered by the settlement, although the payment could be reduced or increased, depending on the volume of claims. Only 3% to 5% of eligible consumers are expected to file claims, according to estimates in court documents.
Eligible consumers will be limited to seeking compensation on a maximum of five devices.
The settlement represents a sliver of the $705 billion in profits that Apple has pocketed since September 2014. It's also a fraction of the roughly $1.5 billion that the lawyers representing consumers had estimated Apple could been required to pay if the company had been found of violating wiretapping and other privacy laws had the case gone to a trial.

The attorneys who filed the lawsuit may seek up to $29.6 million from the settlement fund to cover their fees and other expenses, according to court documents.

Elon Musk sparks speculation with name change on X; this is the name he chose
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and CEO of several tech giants, has once again stirred intrigue by changing his name on X (formerly Twitter) to “Kekius Maximus.”
His new profile image adds to the mystery, featuring Pepe the Frog, a meme often linked to far-right groups, dressed in Roman military attire and holding what resembles a game console.
The billionaire, known for his unpredictable online antics, has offered no explanation for the name change or the image. According to a report by the BBC, the move has ignited conversations across various circles, from cryptocurrency enthusiasts to cultural commentators. Musk’s close association with US President-elect Donald Trump has further fueled the speculation surrounding his intentions.
Musk's social media rebranding has had a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market. A memecoin sharing the same name experienced a sharp surge in value following the name change.
The name "Kekius Maximus" appears to be a playful blend of historical and cultural references. "Kek" originated as a gamer term equivalent to "laugh out loud" and has since been adopted by some alt-right circles. In Egyptian mythology, Kek is the god of darkness, often represented with a frog’s head—a detail some see as an intentional nod to Pepe.
Meanwhile, "Maximus" is often associated with Russell Crowe’s character in the movie “Gladiator,” Maximus Decimus Meridius, a symbol of resilience and leadership. The Roman-style depiction of Pepe in Musk’s profile image seems to tie into this theme of classical grandeur.
As is often the case with Musk, interpretations of his actions vary widely. Whether this is a calculated move or another instance of Musk's enigmatic humor, the change has succeeded in grabbing global attention.

Small businesses brace themselves for potentially disruptive TikTok ban
A possible ban on TikTok has raised concerns among millions of small businesses that rely on the popular short-video platform for growth and marketing.
Desiree Hill, owner of Crown’s Corner Mechanic in Conyers, Georgia, started her journey as a mobile mechanic. TikTok videos showcasing her work quickly gained attention, allowing her to expand to a 9,000-square-foot workshop with five employees just 18 months ago.
"I receive at least two to three customers daily who discovered me through TikTok videos," said Hill.
Since its launch in 2016, TikTok has become a vital tool for small businesses to expand their customer base, advertise, and even sell products directly.
Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after taking office
TikTok estimates that small businesses could collectively lose over $1 billion in revenue within a month if the ban takes effect.
The U.S. Justice Department has instructed TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform or face a ban by January 19, citing security concerns. The Supreme Court is set to review the case this month, while President-elect Donald Trump, assuming office on January 20, has requested a delay in the proceedings.
In the event of a ban, businesses will need to shift to alternative platforms such as Instagram Reels, Snapchat, and YouTube Shorts. While many businesses already have profiles on these platforms, attracting TikTok’s younger audience may pose challenges.
Another strategy includes building a database of customer contacts via email or phone numbers for direct marketing and promotions.
Hill expressed concerns about the limited reach of other platforms. Despite maintaining accounts on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, she believes they lack TikTok’s impact.
"I’m anxious because we are not prepared for this change," she admitted. "TikTok plays a vital role in customer engagement, and losing it could hamper business growth significantly."
Venezuela's top court issues a $10 million fine for TikTok over allegedly deadly video challenges
Similarly, Crystal Lister, who runs Mommy and Me: The Listers in Cypress, Texas, which offers STEM-focused workshops, is exploring a transition to YouTube and Instagram Reels. However, she finds TikTok more user-friendly.
"A TikTok ban would present challenges, as we’d lose key features like video creation and viral sharing. We’ll have to rely on multiple platforms to compensate for TikTok’s functionality," Lister explained.

Venezuela's top court issues a $10 million fine for TikTok over allegedly deadly video challenges
Venezuela's Supreme Court has imposed a $10 million fine on TikTok, accusing the platform of failing to implement safeguards against viral video challenges that allegedly caused the deaths of three children in recent months.
Judge Tania D’Amelio ruled that TikTok acted negligently and mandated the company to pay the fine within eight days. Additionally, the court ordered TikTok to establish an office in Venezuela to monitor and regulate content in compliance with local laws.
Trump asks Supreme Court to delay TikTok ban so he can weigh in after taking office
However, the judge did not clarify how Venezuela intends to enforce the fine against TikTok, whose parent company is based in China. In the past, Venezuela has blocked numerous websites for failing to meet regulations set by the country's telecommunications authority.
TikTok has yet to respond to inquiries from The Associated Press regarding the ruling.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro previously blamed TikTok for the death of a 12-year-old girl in November. Reports suggest she died after participating in a TikTok challenge involving the consumption of tranquilizer pills and attempting to stay awake.
Education Minister Hector Rodriguez also cited another case where a 14-year-old reportedly died after engaging in a TikTok challenge that involved inhaling substances. On November 21, the attorney general linked the death of a third child to similar challenges on the platform.
ChatGPT faces second outage in December
Under Maduro's administration, numerous radio and TV stations have been shut down for their reporting. According to VE Sin Filtro, a group monitoring media freedom, over 60 websites linked to human rights organizations and news outlets were blocked this year.
In August, Venezuela briefly banned the social media platform X amid protests against Maduro's re-election. The government accused X's owner, Elon Musk, of enabling attacks against Venezuela, while Musk accused Maduro of election fraud. Although the ban on X was lifted after 10 days, access remains restricted through the state-owned internet provider Movilnet, though private providers now allow access.

AI is becoming ingrained in businesses; Where is it going in 2025?
NEW YORK (AP) — As artificial intelligence continues to grow at a rapid pace, more and more businesses are grappling with how to adapt both quickly and responsibly.
Dan Priest is the new Chief AI Officer at PwC, one of the world's largest consulting firms, where he works with companies across industries as they adopt this burgeoning technology both into their day-to-day operations and future business models. He says 2024 was all about proving what AI brings to the table — and expects 2025 will shift more into scaling it.
Priest recently spoke with The Associated Press about his new role and other AI business predictions his team has for the year ahead. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Q: When did PwC decide it wanted a Chief AI Officer?
A: We launched the role in early July, on the heels of us doing an AI impact analysis and strategy for the firm. The motivation was simply to make sure we were tapping into AI's full potential, responsibly, to best serve our clients. We work with companies across a range of sectors — including tech, health care and hospitality.
Q: What have the companies you work with told you about how they're adopting AI?
A: AI is showing up in some form or fashion for the majority of our clients these days. In a recent survey that we did of Fortune 1000 companies, nearly half of respondents said AI is fully embedded in their workflows — and then about a third had even embedded it in their products and services.
And AI is more than just a tech initiative, it's also adjusting business strategies. CEOs overwhelmingly recognize that AI will impact their business model in some way — with about 73% of those we spoke to in a predictions report saying that they believe AI would cause a shift in their business model. In particular, we're increasingly seeing generative AI both in the presence of the consumer and throughout product development.
Q: Can you give me examples of what that looks like?
A: To be competitive, companies can’t just predict what consumers want anymore. You have to give them a way to personalize the specific products and services they want — and gen AI has a means of doing that.
Take a business in the cruising sector, for example. In the past, cruise lines would have to predict what each type of foods, products and excursions people wanted. Now, with gen AI, they can have a personalization engine that says, “I’m a fan of these luxury products,” and then make sure those types of luxury products are on board. Or, “I’m a fan of this type of food," and they can make sure that food is on the menu. It gives companies a way to personalize the experience that wasn't possible before.
Q: What risks should companies keep in mind when approaching AI?
A: AI is not monolithic, and there are different maturity levels for different uses. You’ve seen issues in contact centers, for example, where AI agents were introduced and in some cases gave customers hallucinations with wrong information. And so having a “maturity test” to make sure they tech you're using is ready for prime time, particularly when it's customer-facing, is important. Those same disciplines are critical for protecting internal data, which you don't want inadvertently training a large language model.
That’s one category of risk. On the other side of all of this, another risk is not moving quickly enough and falling behind. Your AI strategy will either put you ahead or make it hard to ever catch up. If we take a lesson from the Internet era, a lot of those early movers ended up being winners for the next ten, 20 years. We expect to see something very similar for companies that embrace AI today, both early on and in a trustworthy way.

ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra Review: Is It Really a Flagship Killer?
ZTE launched Nubia Z70 Ultra on November 25, 2024. The phone features flagship-level components like a robust processor, a vibrant display, a solid battery, etc. In addition to regular upgrades, the phone has introduced unique functionalities to some of its features, too. However, smartphone lovers are arguing whether the Nubia Z70 Ultra is a flagship killer. Let’s dive into that argument while reviewing the phone’s key specs, and pros, cons, and pricing in Bangladesh.
Key Features of ZTE Nubia 270 Ultra
.
Design
The first stand-apart feature of the ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra is its design. It uses a box-like aluminum frame for its main body, which may remind you of the design of the Galaxy Note series. However, the horizontal camera panel on the mid-back sets the difference.
The top-right section of the rear panel contains a circular primary camera module. The rest of the back panel is fresh, plain, and sleek. The body seems bulky, measuring 164.3 mm by 77.1 mm by 8.6 mm. The bulkiness results in a weight of 228g. It may sound heavier, but other comparable high-end devices like Honor Magic 6 Pro and Vivo X200 Pro carry a similar weight.

On the right edge, there is a two-stage camera button and a red-marked power button. On the left side, you will find a customizable button that lets users specify its function. All buttons are placed in convenient spots.
Display
The ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra presents a flat 6.85-inch giant AMOLED display that makes watching content and gaming equally fun. The front camera is an under-display lens hidden with delicacy. Most of the time, users won’t notice any sign of it. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold used a similar front lens, but it failed to cover it with Nubia’s efficiency.
Users will experience smooth scrolling and frame change as Z70’s display supports a 144Hz refresh rate. Compared to the 120Hz refresh rate of Honor Magic 6 Pro, Oppo Find X, and Vivo X200 Pro, Nubia’s 144Hz is appreciable. The display is protected by Longxi glass (gen 2).

The display's downsides are it's 1216 by 2688 pixels resolution and 2000 nits peak brightness. The absence of the LTPO technology further weighs down the competitive value of the Nubia Z70 Ultra’s display. However, gamers and avid content consumers will cherish Nubia’s lensless display design.
Cameras
The Nubia Z70 Ultra's primary camera module has two divisions. The upper division is a circular lens holder that houses a 50MP wide-aperture (f/1.6 to f/4.0) lens. It comes with OIS and multidirectional PDAF. It also uses a unique adjustable physical aperture offering the user more control to take a perfect shot.
Below the circular module is a horizontal second camera module that rooms a 64MP (f/2.5) telephoto lens and a 50MP (f/2.0) ultrawide lens. Combined, the three primary lenses can capture quality pictures. But if compared, their specifications may sound low in front of the powerful 180MP and 200MP periscope telephoto lenses used in the vivo X200 Pro, and Honor Magic6 Pro.
Read more: Vivo iQOO Z9 Turbo Plus Review: A Game-Changer Among Mid-Range Gaming Smartphones
The under-display 16MP (f/2.5) front camera is another disappointment for the phone. It captures pictures that highly rely on the beautification capability of the phone.
The utmost video recording capacity of Nubia Z70 Ultra’s rear sensors is 8K by 30fps; while the front sensor can capture only 1080p footage at 30fps at maximum.
Performance and Hardware
Introducing the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, the Nubia Z70 Ultra becomes one of the forerunners of the latest 3nm Qualcomm processor. The chipset is an unparalleled feature of the phone. Together with the Adreno 830 GPU, it provides wonderful performance in playing high-resolution games and cracking complicated tasks.
Read more: realme C75 Review: What Does This Budget Smartphone Offer?
The RAM capacity ranges from 12 to 24GB, while the internal storage capacity reaches up to 1TB ranging from 256GB. The Nubia Z70 Ultra offers multiple storage and RAM combos, including 256GB * 12GB RAM, 512GB * 16GB RAM, and 1TB * 16GB or 24GB RAM. Powerful UFS 4.0 technology ensures high-speed reading and writing performance, providing even a more reactive gaming, editing, and multitasking experience.
Software
The Nubia Z70 Ultra operates through the Nebula AIOS, a modified version of Android 15. Nebula AIOS does its part remarkably well, providing smooth and effortless navigation, app installations, and performance. But like other features, it also projects a limit.
Nubia offers a three-year update range for their phones. This period is far below the standard line compared with the seven years of updates given by Google and Samsung and four years of updates offered by Xiaomi and OnePlus.

Battery and Charging
A robust 6150 mAh battery powers up the Nubia Z70 Ultra. Backed by a fast 80W charger, the battery will surely provide users with relentless support. However, the lack of wireless and reverse-wireless charging capacity is unacceptable nowadays, especially in this price range.
Pros and Cons of the ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra
Pros
- 5G network connectivity.- IP68/IP69 water and dust resistance.- AMOLED display, 144Hz refresh rate.- Android 15 with NebulaAI OS UI.- High-performance chipset for gaming and multitasking.- 6150 mAh battery with 80W fast charging.- Under-display fingerprint scanner.- NFC, OTG, and infrared port support.- 8K video recording with gyro-EIS.- Stereo speakers.- Up to 24GB RAM and 1TB storage.

Cons
- No audio jack.- No secondary card slot.- No Emergency SOS feature.- Lacks reverse and wireless charging.- Selfie camera limited to 1080p recording.
Price of the ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra in Bangladesh
The ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra is unofficially available in Bangladesh for around 80000 TK. However, the price is subject to change.
Conclusion
The Nubia Z70 Ultra competes in the market by introducing a set of unique features. A range of powerful lenses, an adjustable aperture control, the latest Qualcomm 8 Elite processor, and a super durable battery– all these components heighten the phone's functionality. However, the provision of some handy features, like an audio jack and a wireless charging system, could make the ZTE Nubia Z70 Ultra a better deal. The phone can be a great choice for people who love gaming and consume a good amount of content. Users who want to use the phone to take perfect images and selfies may look for other options.

10 Best-Selling Video Games of 2024
A whole bunch of heavy-hitting virtual games have been released throughout 2024. However, only a few have earned enough to be considered the world’s best-seller video games in 2024. Let’s go over the list of the most revenue-generating virtual games this year.
10 Top-Selling Video Games of 2024
.
EA Sports College Football 25
EA Sports College Football 25 has topped the list of top-selling games. Several trusted and dedicated sources, like Circana and Video Games Chronicle, have announced the game as the American best-seller of the year.
EA Sports College Football 25 made around USD 0.5 billion within two weeks of its launch on July 19, 2024. About 2.2 million players reached the game during its four-day pre-order period. The revenue collection soared so high that it surpassed the previous record of Madden NFL series.

Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 reversed the original’s isometric strategy and introduced a third-person shooter format. The result was unprecedented, as the game was rated the top-selling PS5 game in 2024.
Helldivers 2 was released on February 8, 2024, and offered a unique and far more enjoyable experience than its competitors. Due to the complications attributed to a PSN requirement, the game didn’t launch in around 177 countries. Yet, it did remarkably well.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
Call of Duty has represented tactical modern warfare gaming since its first appearance. Despite the despair that fell upon Modern Warfare 3, the series restored and further pushed its reputation with Black Ops 6.
First launched on October 25, 2024, COD: Black Ops 6 pulled off the highest collection of the franchise driving a 61% boost in revenue for the Xbox. Now, the game is enlisted as one of the top-selling Xbox games.

Dragon’s Dogma 2
Underpraised compared with the previous title, Dragon’s Dogma 2 didn’t show less acceleration in earning around the same revenue that its ancestor collected in its lifetime. The second title came out on March 21, 2024, and around 3.3 million copies have been sold so far.
According to IGN, Dragon’s Dogma 2 collected over 2.5 million copies just within 11 days after its release. The instant sales rush led the game to be one of the top sellers.
EA Sports FC 25
It never occurred to EA’s FIFA titles not to make the list of the highest-selling games of the year. The EA Sports FC 25 hasn’t differed, too. The soccer simulator game has observed a successful year in terms of gross sales, summing up an anticipated $1 billion in revenue.
It’s notable that after two failed attempts to achieve a new license agreement, EA decided to change FIFA to FC. Apart from the name, the game remained the same. The title continued to present upgraded gameplay with each iteration.
