The 33rd death anniversary of Imam Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was commemorated in Dhaka Saturday through a webinar.

Diplomats, scholars, analysts, and academics attended the seminar organised by Iran Cultural Centre in Dhaka and paid tribute to the struggle of Khomeini.

Khomeini was the undisputed leader of the oppressed people of the world, who established the Islamic Revolution and gave hope to the helpless and deprived people of the world, the speakers said.

The Islamic uprising he founded is a role model for development for the liberated people of the world today, they added.

Khomeini was simultaneously a philosopher, a fiqh (scholar of Islamic jurisprudence), political leader and spiritual saint.

They stated Khomeini was a political leader who wanted politics to serve religion, power to serve the people, and God to be the centre of everything.

Professor ANM Meshquat Uddin, former vice-chancellor of South-East University, was present as the chief guest in this webinar.

Ali Piri, head of mission of the Embassy of Iran in Bangladesh, and Dr Anisuzzaman, former chairman of the department of philosophy, Dhaka University (DU), joined the webinar as special guests.

Presided over by Cultural Counsellor of Iran Cultural Centre in Dhaka Syed Hasan Sehat, the webinar was also joined by DU Persian Language and Literature Professor KM Saiful Islam Khan, prominent writer-researcher and Islamic thinker Dr Isa Shahedi, Islamic Education Centre Khulna Principal Hujjatul Islam Syed Ibrahim Khalil Razavi, and Rajshahi University Persian Language and Literature Professor Md Kamal Uddin.
