Argentina shakes off chaos of Morocco game by beating Iraq 3-1. Spain reaches Olympic quarterfinals
Argentina got its Olympic men's soccer campaign back on track by beating Iraq 3-1 on Saturday in Lyon.
Argentina, one of the pre-tournament favorites, suffered a shock 2-1 loss to Morocco in its Group B opening game marred by a pitch invasion from Moroccan fans and a two-hour delay.
While Iraq threatened to pull off another surprise when Aymen Hussein leveled the game in first-half stoppage time, goals from Luciano Gondou and Ignacio Fernandez sealed victory for Argentina.
Thiago Almada, who Argentina coach Javier Mascherano said had a watch stolen when the team's training base was robbed earlier this week, opened the scoring with a volley in the 14th minute at Stade de Lyon.
But Hussein's header in the fifth minute of first half-time added time evened the game before the break.
Gondou's far-post header in the 62nd restored Argentina's lead and Fernandez curled in a long-range shot from the edge of the box in the 85th.
The win leaves Argentina level with Iraq and Morocco on three points. Morocco was playing Ukraine in a later kick off.
Spain 3, Dominican Rep. 1Spain reached the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over the Dominican Republic in Bordeaux.
Goals from Fermín Lopez, Alex Baena and Miguel Gutierrez made it two wins from two for Spain in Group C.
Lopez — one of Barcelona’s rising stars — scored in the 24th, but Angel Montes de Oca evened the game in the 38th.
The Dominican Republic's Edison Azcona was sent off before halftime. Baena restored Spain’s lead in the 55th and Gutierrez sealed the win in the 70th.
Spain’s men are aiming to add to a golden period for its nation’s soccer teams after the women’s team won the World Cup last year and the men won the European Championship earlier this month.

The current SAFF Women’s champions Bangladesh Football team won the two-match FIFA International Women’s Football (Tier-1) Series 2-0 beating hosts Bhutan by 4-2 goals in a keenly contested 2nd and last match at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu Saturday evening.
Touring Bangladesh Women’s Football team played the two-match FIFA International Series against Himalayan nation Bhutan as a part of their preparation for the upcoming SAFF Women’s Championship 2024 to be held in Nepal next October.
This was the 4th consecutive victory for the Bangladesh National Women’s team against Bhutan after beating them by 2-0 goals in the SAFF Women’s Championship at Biratnagar in Nepal in 2019, beat them by 8-0 goals in Kathmandu in 2022 on way to clinch their first-ever SAFF Women’s Championship title, apart from their 5-1 goals victory in the first friendly last Wednesday.
In that match, the youthful Bangladesh Women's team fell behind but soon assumed one-way traffic in a flying start, outplaying the hosts by 5-1 goals at the same venue, featuring a hattrick by Sagorika.
Today's match between new English head coach Peter James Butler-groomed Bangladesh and Bhutanese women's team was locked in 2-2 goals in the first half of the day's match.
Like the previous match on Wednesday, coming from behind, Bangladesh won the match and series.
This time Bangladesh were forced to field an youthful women’s team without key players like Tohura Khatun, Shamsunnahar Jr, Afeida Khondakar, Shaheda Akter Ripa for the HSC exam and Krishna Rani Sarkar and Aklima Khatun for injury.
Earlier, Bangladesh Women’s team, under the new British Head Coach Peter James Butler, played a two-match preparatory series in Dhaka against the Chinese Taipei in last May and June and lost both the matches by 0-4 and 0-1 goal respectively.

'Flooding rains' threaten to dampen Paris Olympics opening ceremony
The Paris Olympics look likely to get off to a soggy start.
Meteo-France, the French weather service, is predicting “flooding rains” Friday evening when the opening ceremony is set to unroll along the Seine River. But the show is set to go on as planned, starting at 1:30 p.m. EDT/7:30 p.m. CEST and should last more than three hours.
Already in the late afternoon, skies were gray with intermittent drizzle. There was a silver lining, though, with temperatures expected to stay relatively warm throughout the evening.
Instead of a traditional march into a stadium, about 6,800 athletes will parade on more than 90 boats on the Seine River for 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). Though 10,700 athletes are expected to compete at these Olympics, hundreds of soccer players are based outside Paris, surfers are in Tahiti and many have yet to arrive for their events in the second week, organizers said Thursday.
Hundreds of thousands of people, including 320,000 paying and invited ticket-holders, are expected to line the Seine’s banks as athletes are paraded along the river on boats.
