Chennai Test: India dominate with massive lead as Bangladesh falter
The hosts India secured a 227-run lead in their first innings after Bangladesh tumbled for meager 149 runs, with Jasprit Bumrah taking four wickets.
In the first innings, riding on the sixth Test century of Ravichandran Ashwin, India posted 376 runs.
For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud bagged five wickets, the first such feat for a Bangladeshi bowler against India.
Bangladesh started their reply disastrously, losing opener Shadman Islam in the first over of the innings. Four of Bangladesh’s top five batters failed to reach a double-digit total. The only batter at the top who reached a double-digit total was Najmul Hossain Shanto, who fell, scoring 20.
Mominul Haque suffered a golden duck to Akash Depp, who bagged Zakir Hasan and Mominul off two consecutive deliveries.
Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz attempted to stabilize the innings but couldn't convert their starts into substantial scores. Shakib scored 32, and Litton and Mehidy fell for 22 and 27, respectively.
For India, Bumrah took four wickets, while Mohammad Siraj Akash, and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each.
With a commanding lead of over 200 runs, India chose to not enforce follow-on and instead decided to bat again to cement their strong position in the match.

New Zealand takes slender first-innings lead against Sri Lanka in 1st test
Sri Lanka's record of four wins in four tests against New Zealand in Galle was in mild jeopardy Friday when the Kiwis took a 35-run lead after the first innings of the first test.
In reply at lunch Friday, Sri Lanka was 32 for one on the third day, trailing New Zealand by three runs with nine wickets in hand.
Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who was erratic with his line and length on Day 2, found some rhythm Friday and finished with four wickets. He was well backed up by off-spinner Ramesh Mendis, who finished with three wickets as New Zealand was bowled out for 340 in its first innings.
Daryl Mitchell scored a half-century before being run out while Glenn Philips provided some extra entertainment, hitting 49 off 48 balls. Philips hit five sixes, with some of them going out of the ground.
Sri Lanka had a half-hour to negotiate before lunch and the hosts lost Pathum Nissanka in that period when he was superbly caught in the slips by Tim Southee as William O’Rourke claimed his sixth wicket in the match. The tall fast bowler had claimed a five-wicket haul in the first innings.
New Zealand had a warm-up test last week against Afghanistan in India washed out after five days without a ball being bowled. Sri Lanka is coming off a three-match test series in England which the hosts won 2-1.
The teams will play a second test in Galle, beginning on Sept. 26.

Chennai Test: Hasan becomes first Bangladeshi to take five-for against India
Right-arm pacer Hasan Mahmud bags five wickets in the first Test of the two-match series against India in Chennai. After his skilful bowling display, Bangladesh started their first innings, and lost three quick wickets at lunch of day two.
With his exceptional bowling performance, Hasan became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take five wickets against India. He also had a five-for in the previous inning against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.
Variations in length and clever use of the seam were key for Hasan in this inning. While removing Rhohit Sharma, his delivery went away while passing the batter, and Rohit missed the line, so the ball touched his bat before going to the second slip.
Hasan also exploited natural variations, like a too-full delivery that drifted down the legside, catching Shubman Gill by surprise.
His dismissal of Virat Kohli was classic. He lured him into a drive outside off to a ball that wasn't quite there for the shot.
India ended their first inning at 376, with Ravichandran Ashwin hitting the highest of 113. They were at 339 for six at the end of day one.
Facing a daunting target, Bangladesh lost wickets early in their first innings, with two in two balls. Akash Deep struck twice in two consecutive deliveries, dismissing Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque, who both completely misread the line of the ball.

Chennai Test: Astral Ashwhin helps India fight back against Tigers with a tonne
Ravichandran Ashwin hits his sixth Test tonne to help India fight back after losing six wickets inside the tea break of day one of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh.
Hasan Mahmud was the hero of Bangladesh on the day, taking four wickets with three in the first session after choosing to bowl first, winning the toss. Later, Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz took one wicket each.
Before the tea break, India were stuttering, losing six wickets, and Bangladesh were hoping to wrap up India for a smaller total.
But at that point, Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja made up a strong partnership. At the end of the day, their partnership reached 195 runs. While Ashwhin remained not out, scoring a hundred, Jadeja stood at 86.
Bangladesh managed to use the early moisture of the wicket well with their pace attack led by the young lads like Hasan and Nahid. But they failed to keep up the momentum in the later part of the day.
Pacers were at the forefront of Bangladesh’s attack on day one. Mehidy has also helped them to keep the Indian batters at bay. He bowled 21 overs and took one wicket. Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s main spinner, also bowled for eight overs but without luck.
“It's an old-school Chennai surface with bounce and carry,” Ashwin said at the end day’s play. “(It’s) Always special to play in front of a home crowd; it's a ground I completely love. It does feel special.”
With this century, Ashwin became only the fifth cricketer to have scored multiple centuries and multiple five-fors at the same venue. He now has two hundred and four five-fors in Chennai.
Ashwin praised his partner Jadeja for inspiring him when he was sweating and feeling tired. According to the batter, Jadeja advised him not to stress too much about converting the doubles to three runs, which helped him release the pressure in the middle.
India finished the day's play at a respectable 339 for six. Despite losing six wickets before Tea, reaching a score near 350 is certainly a positive for India, giving them some breathing room as they head into the second day.

Harry Kane warns Bayern Munich needs to tighten up despite winning start under new coach Kompany
Harry Kane and Bayern Munich are scoring a torrent of goals under new coach Vincent Kompany, but the England striker still thinks they're vulnerable.
Despite netting four times in Bayern's record-breaking 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday, Kane seemed more concerned with the two soft goals the team conceded just after half-time.
“We need to learn. We spoke about, already this season, continuing the performance from the first half. Each first half we've played has been really good this season. The second half has kind of dropped off," Kane told broadcaster DAZN after the game.
"We got away with it today because we were able to step up another gear but against the top opposition we could get punished for that, so we need to try and iron that out.”
Bayern has scored a scarcely believable 24 goals in five games in all competitions under Kompany — nine of them by Kane — but hasn’t faced top-class opposition yet.
That means it's still an open question whether Kompany's Bayern is a better team than the one that finished an underwhelming third in the Bundesliga last season.
Against Zagreb, there were echoes of how Bayern played under Kompany’s predecessors Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel — lots of goals, but fragile under pressure.
Zagreb scored back-to-back goals in the 49th and 50th minutes to expose glaring gaps at the back and briefly cut the deficit to 3-2. The positioning of central defenders Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae, who have been Bayern's first-choice partnership for a year, was a particular issue.
Bayern's next game is on Saturday at Werder Bremen, which beat Tuchel's team 1-0 in January. Bremen, ninth last season, will be Kompany's first opponent that finished in the top half of the table.
Despite Kompany's experience as a player, taking over at Bayern has been a big step up for a coach who was in charge of Burnley when that club was relegated from the English Premier League last season.
The former Belgium defender was far from Bayern's top choice, either. The club was stung by a very public failure to sign preferred targets like Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso or Germany's Nagelsmann — or even to persuade Tuchel to stay — before eventually landing on Kompany, who signed in May.
With a high-profile Bundesliga test coming on Sept. 28 against champion Leverkusen, Bayern doesn’t have long to iron out defensive problems.
Elsewhere in the league, two Champions League teams meet on Sunday as Stuttgart plays Borussia Dortmund. Leverkusen takes on Wolfsburg the same day and Leipzig visits promoted St. Pauli, which is without a league win since its coach Fabian Hürzeler left for Brighton in the close season.

Bangladesh vs India Chennai Test: Ashwin, Jadeja add up 100 runs after losing six
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja put up more than 100 runs in the seventh wicket partnership for India in the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai.
India lost six wickets inside the Tea of day one, with Yashasvi Jaiswal hitting a fifty.
Bangladesh were in control in both the first two sessions of the day with Hasan Mahmud taking four wickets, and Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz joining the party with one wicket each.
When Bangladesh were hoping to wrap up India quickly, Ashwin and Jadeja stood tall and helped India past the 250-run mark.
Bangladesh won the toss in this match and decided to bowl first, a decision that surprised many as it was the first time such a move had been made since 1982.
But Bangladesh managed to use the wicket well in the first hour when Hasan took three wickets of India’s top-order. He got early movements that earned him three quick wickets. In the second session, Hasan took another wicket.
At the end of the 63rd over, India were batting at 256 for six, with Ashwin and Jadeja not out for 64 and 43, respectively.
