One Year On: How Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan redefined the 'Star Kid' launch in Bollywood
As Junaid Khan marks one year since his debut in Maharaj, many in Bollywood are rethinking what a "star kid" launch should look like. In an industry often critiqued for favouring legacy over merit, Aamir Khan’s son has quietly — and perhaps unintentionally — become the face of a very different narrative.
When Maharaj premiered on Netflix on June 21, 2024, it was far removed from the conventional Bollywood debut template for celebrity children — no romantic fantasy, no glamorous co-star, no elaborate promotional blitz. Instead, Junaid stepped into the spotlight through a serious period drama, set in 1862 colonial Bombay, where he portrayed Karsandas Mulji, a reformist journalist battling religious exploitation in court.
The film, based on a real-life libel case, focused on his character’s mission to expose a powerful religious figure, portrayed by Jaideep Ahlawat, who was accused of sexually exploiting his followers under the guise of spiritual authority. The narrative concluded in a dramatic courtroom showdown, where Junaid’s character emerged triumphant — a reflection, perhaps, of the real-life legal controversy the film faced.
Tere Naam look inspired by former president: Salman Khan
OTT Debut, Not a Theatrical BlitzFor someone carrying the weight of being Aamir Khan’s son, expectations were high for a high-profile, theatrical launch. Instead, Maharaj quietly debuted on an OTT platform after a delayed release due to legal action from a religious group. The Gujarat High Court had initially stayed the release, citing concerns from a Vaishnavite sect who feared the film could hurt religious sentiments. The stay was eventually lifted, and the film was released on Netflix with little fanfare.
This unflashy launch — marked by minimal marketing and no red carpets — stood in stark contrast to the spectacle typically reserved for Bollywood’s new-generation elite.
Simplicity Over StardomIn keeping with the tone of his debut, Junaid Khan’s off-screen personality has also surprised many. Often spotted taking public transport or walking around Mumbai in casual clothing, Junaid has become a rare example of a star kid who chooses practicality over privilege.
In interviews, he’s said there’s no grand philosophy behind his lifestyle — just a preference for efficiency in a city plagued by traffic. But in an era when star children often flaunt luxury, Junaid’s modesty stands out as refreshing.
A recent incident at the premiere of Sitaare Zameen Par further highlighted this: Junaid was turned away by Salman Khan’s security guard who didn’t recognise him — an incident symbolic of how unassuming his public presence is, despite his lineage.
BTS’ RM admits feeling jealous of great music, finds peace in art
Content Over ControversyDespite early hurdles and a delayed release, Maharaj received a warm response for both its subject and Junaid’s restrained, committed performance. With no marketing blitz or studio hype, the film quietly proved that compelling content can still rise above background noise.
India’s nepotism debate has long revolved around who sustains success after being given a head-start. But Junaid Khan’s journey so far suggests something different: that privilege doesn’t always have to be exploited. It can be wielded with grace — or even quietly ignored.
As Maharaj turns one, Junaid Khan continues to be an unlikely figure in the nepotism discourse — a star kid by birth, but not by behaviour. And that, perhaps, is what makes him Bollywood’s most "non-nepo" nepo kid.

Tere Naam look inspired by former president: Salman Khan
Actor Salman Khan has revealed that his iconic look in the 2003 film Tere Naam was inspired by none other than former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Known for setting fashion trends with his hairstyles and outfits, Salman’s long hair parted down the middle in Tere Naam became one of his most memorable looks.
While appearing as the first guest on Season 3 of The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, the actor shared an interesting anecdote about the inspiration behind the look, reported Hindustan Times.
Makers Of The Raja Saab Warns About "Serious Action" Over Leaked Teaser Of Prabhas's Film
(My hair in Tere Naam is inspired by Abdul Kalam sir, even Rahul Roy had the same hairstyle. I thought a small town hero would have long hair like this. The yesteryear heroes all had long hair, which inspired me.)
In Tere Naam, Salman played Radhe Mohan, a jobless rowdy youth with a strong sense of justice, a character far removed from the dignified figure of Dr. Kalam. The contrast, however, adds a unique depth to the film’s cultural legacy.
The third season of The Great Indian Kapil Show premiered on June 21 with Salman Khan as the opening episode's guest.

BTS’ RM admits feeling jealous of great music, finds peace in art
BTS leader RM, also known as Kim Namjoon, recently opened up about his deep connection with art and the occasional jealousy he feels when listening to exceptional music by other artists. In a candid conversation shared on Samsung Newsroom’s YouTube channel, RM said he feels at peace with visual art because he doesn’t feel competitive toward it—unlike music, where he sometimes struggles to stay objective.
Recalling a visit to the Art Institute of Chicago during a tour, RM said he was captivated by works from Monet and Van Gogh, which brought him comfort. “My peace comes from knowing I’m not good at drawing,” he joked. But with music, it's different: “Sometimes when I listen to great musicians’ albums, I get really jealous,” he confessed.

The Indigo rapper described himself as someone still learning and growing, emphasizing that his love for art grew organically over time. Though he's often praised as a curator, RM said he’s simply a passionate fan. “I didn’t major in art history… I just like it.”
RM also addressed the perception of political messaging in his Instagram posts, saying his art shares are purely personal and have no political or commercial ties. “If I like it, I share it,” he said, noting that fans have helped spotlight many underrated artists. RM concluded by expressing his dream of creating a space in Seoul that connects cultures and generations through art.

All BTS members officially complete military service as Suga gets discharged
BTS member Suga has officially completed his mandatory military service, marking the full return of all seven members of the global K-pop sensation from enlistment duties.
Suga, who served as a social service agent—an alternative to active-duty military service—was formally discharged on Wednesday after using his remaining leave days. His official release date is set for Saturday, according to BTS’ label, Big Hit Entertainment. No public event has been scheduled to mark the occasion, with the agency citing concerns over potential overcrowding.
This milestone paves the way for a long-awaited reunion of all BTS members, who are expected to return as a full group in 2025.
Last week, RM and V completed their military service, followed by Jimin and Jung Kook a day later. The four had enlisted together in December 2023. Jin, the oldest member, was discharged in June 2024, while J-Hope completed his service in October 2023.
Of the seven members, six served in the army, while Suga’s alternative service was granted due to a shoulder surgery in 2020.
BTS aims for 2025 reunion as RM and V complete military service
South Korea mandates military service of 18–21 months for all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28, as a defense measure against threats from North Korea. Though exemptions are available for certain athletes and artists, K-pop idols like BTS are not automatically eligible.
A 2020 revision of the Military Service Act allowed BTS members to delay enlistment until age 30. In 2022, the group decided to fulfill their duties despite public debate over possible exemptions.

Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan Return: AI revives kung fu classics and debuts futuristic film in Shanghai
Martial arts legends Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li could soon grace the screen once more, this time in digitally resurrected form, as China launches an ambitious AI-powered revival of classic kung fu cinema.
Unveiled at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival, the China Film Foundation, alongside industry partners, announced two major initiatives under the Kung Fu Film Heritage Project: an AI-led restoration of 100 iconic martial arts films, and the debut of A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border, the world’s first fully AI-produced animated feature.
According to Variety, the restoration project will use artificial intelligence to remaster titles such as Fist of Fury, The Big Boss, Drunken Master and Once Upon a Time in China, enhancing image and sound while preserving their original aesthetic and storytelling.
“From Bruce Lee to Jackie Chan, from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to Wolf Warrior, these films have shown the world the vitality and spirit of the Chinese people,” said Zhang Qilin, chair of the China Film Foundation. “They are our cinematic calling cards to the world.”
In the project’s first phase, ten films will be prioritised, backed by an initial investment of RMB100 million (USD13.9 million), confirmed Canxing Media chair Tian Ming.
‘How to Train Your Dragon’ takes off with $83.7M opening, surpassing ‘Lilo & Stitch’
“AI is the brush, but creativity is the soul,” Tian said. “Classic kung fu films embody China’s spiritual backbone. We’re inviting global partners to join this cultural and technological reboot.”
Meanwhile, A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border, a futuristic reimagining of John Woo’s crime classic, premiered at the festival.
Created entirely by a 30-person team at Quantum Animation using a full-stack AI pipeline from scripting and modelling to animation and rendering the film exemplifies AI’s growing influence in creative production.
“This entire animated feature was made by just 30 people,” said producer Zhang Qing. “AI has collapsed the barrier between creativity and execution. The production cycle has gone from years to months.”
Presented as a proof-of-concept for the future of Chinese genre storytelling, Cyber Border blends martial arts and sci-fi elements while encouraging creators to adapt IPs like Wong Fei-hung and Nezha into games and interactive formats.
