“We have to continue this effort to bring a balance in region-based power generation,” he said, addressing a contract signing ceremony at Biduyt Bhaban in the city.
State-owned Power Development Board (PDB) signed the deal with Chinese company Dongfang Electric International Corporation (DEC) to set up a diesel-based 150 MW simple cycle power plant in Nilphamari’s Syedpur.
DEC will act as an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor to build the power plant within June 2019 at a cost of Tk 1,000 crore.
Prime Minister’s Energy Affairs Advisor Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Power Secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus and PDB Chairman Khaled Mahmood also addressed the function.
PDB Secretary Mina Masuduzzaman and DEC President Luo Zhigang signed the contract on behalf of their respective sides.
State Minister Nasrul said the government was committed to bring everyone in the country under electricity coverage and urged the contractor to implement the project as per schedule.
Tawfiq said the new project would play a substantial role in meeting the power demand in the country’s northern region.
