The President made the remarks while he was delivering his speech as chief guest at a mass reception accorded to him on the first day of his three-day visit to his home district Kishoreganj Gurudoyal College field.
“People are the source of all power, so they should be respected. People should be treated as humans”, he said.
Kishoreganj district reception committee hosted the reception programme as Abdul Hamid paid the visit after taking oath of office as the country’s President for the second consecutive term on April 24.
President Abdul Hamid also urged all political parties to nominate good candidates in next polls for the betterment of the country in the greater interest of the country and its people.
The President urged the voters to choose the party, which would work to gear up country’s overall development in next Jatiya Sangsad election.
“Holding the chair of the President, I cannot deliver any political speech. But I can say people should take the right decision in casting their valuable votes and electing their local leaders,” he added.
He further called upon the voters to elect people who would not deceive the general public and grab government’s allocation in the name of different development projects including “Food for Work”.
Referring to his political background since his student life, President Hamid said he had to face many difficulties to reach the present position. “In the meantime, I have lost many of my nearest people, friends, fellow political colleagues . . . I recall their contribution with due respect and pray for their eternal peace.”
Seeking people’s blessings, he said, “I want to spend the rest of my life for the welfare of the country and the people.”
In reply to a charter of demands made by the local people, the President assured them of providing all necessary steps to set up a full-fledged university in Kishoreganj and ensure a smooth rail communication with Kishoreganj.
Kishoreganj Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate Md Zillur Rahman presided over the reception programme followed by a cultural programme.
Members of the Parliament engineer Rejwan Ahammad Taufiq, Afzal Hossain and Sohrab Uddin, son of the President Rasel Ahmed Tuhin spoke at the function.
President Hamid arrived by a helicopter at Helipad Ground at about 2 pm where he was received by political leaders, local MP and senior officials of the district administration by presenting a bouquet.
Earlier on the day, the President left for Kishoreganj for a three-day visit to address several public meetings and hold view-exchange meetings.
Senior civil and military officials and secretaries concerned to Bangabhaban accompanied the President.
