6 of a family burnt in Narsingdi fire
Six members of a family, including children and a woman, suffered burn injuries in an explosion apparently from a gas pipeline leak in Narsingdi's Madhabdi early Monday.
The injured are Shamim Mia, 40, his wife Akalima Begum, 35, their daughters Sanjida, 18, and Ria Moni, 9, and Shamim's elder brother Ghaffar Mia, 44, and younger brother Rashid Mia, 32.
The incident took place at a house in Gadairchar area of Nuralapur Union of Sadar Upazila around 3 am on Monday.
The victims were first taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Later, they were transferred to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for better treatment.
According to locals, a person named Manik Mia of Algi area has been illegally connecting gas to various houses in the area for a long time.
Recently, Manik Mia has given an illegal connection to the house of a woman named Bilkis through the drain next to Shamim Mia's house.
Md. Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Madhabadi police station, said that the initial investigation seems to have caused the fire due to the explosion of gas leakage in the pipe.
"Action will be taken against the perpetrators upon the complaint," he added.

2 people injured as CU shuttle train hit human hauler in Chattogram
Two people were injured when a shuttle train of Chittagong University (CU) hit a human hauler at No 2 Rail Gate level crossing in Panchlaish area of Chattogram port city on Monday.
The injured were identified as Md Aziz, 48 of Sitakunda upazila and Amir Hossain, 17 of Halishahar area of the city.

The accident occurred around 2:30 pm when the CU bound shuttle train from the city crashed into the human hauler, leaving two people injured, said Nurul alam Asheque, in-charge of Chattogram Medical College and Hospital police camp.

13 fishermen go missing for five days in Bay of Bengal
A fishing trawler with 13 fishermen has been missing for the last five days since it went fishing in the Bay of Bengal from Anwara upazila of Chattogram.
In the meantime, another trawler was sent from the coast of Anwara to search for the trawler, but there is no trace of the missing fishermen and the trawler.
The trawler left for fishing from Sarengaghat of the upazila at around 8 pm on Wednesday (January 3).

Md. Nizam Uddin, owner of the trawler, said that during the departure of the trawler, food was given to the trawler for 15 days. They left the coast on Wednesday night and contacted them last on Friday. At last contact, they said that there was a problem with the trawler's engine, the trawler was not running and they were floating in the water.
At that time, they were near St. Martin's and Teknaf.

"Later, we sent another trawler to them. The trawler searched for three days but could not find any trace of them. We have reported the matter to the naval police," he added.
Md Faruk, duty officer of the river police, said, "We have been informed about the matter. But we were on election duty for the last few days. In the meantime, we have informed the matter in different places, so that if anyone gets the news, they can inform us."

2 of a family among three dead in Manikganj road crash
Three people including two members of a family were killed and two others injured as a speeding truck crashed into a CNG-run autorickshaw on Hemayetpur regional road in Singair upazila of Manikganj on Monday.
The deceased were identified as the autorickshaw passengers Jasim Talukdar, 45, his grandson Yeasin, 5, and driver Shaheen Mollah, 42, a resident of Burundi village under Sadar upazila of the district.
The injured were identified as Jasim’s son Hamza, 3, and another passenger Fouzia, 30.
Sadar Police Station’s officer-in-charge Md Habil Hossain said the accident occurred around 10 am when the sand-laden drum truck collided with the autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction, leaving the three dead on the spot and two more injured.
Stating the condition of the injured as critical, he said they were admitted to 250-bed Manikganj Sadar Hospital.
The bodies were sent to the hospital’s morgue for autopsy, he said, adding that the truck was seized but its driver managed to flee.

Over 50 cocktails exploded in Habiganj
Habiganj witnessed more than 50 cocktail explosions in different places of the town on Saturday night ahead of the 12th parliamentary election scheduled to be held on Sunday.
The cocktails exploded in various places including the district election office, said Ajay Chandra Dev, officer-in-charge (OC) of Habiganj police station.
Besides, a clash between police and supporters of a 48-hr blockade enforced by BNP and other like-minded political parties, took place at Poil Road in Shayestanagar area of Habiganj district around 8pm.

Village Police on duty in polling centre found dead in Rajbari
A village police officer on duty at a polling center was found dead in Rajbari’s Baliakandi upazila early on Saturday.
The deceased, Ranjit Kumar Dey, was stationed at Char Arkandi Government Primary School with its night guard, Mohammad Yusuf.
Quoting Yusuf, police said that Ranjit left the school premises to use the bathroom around 3:30 am. As he didn’t return for a while, night guard Yusuf looked for him and notified the headmaster of the school about the situation.
Later, his body was found in a bush beside the school’s bathroom around 5 am.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baliakandi Police Station, Alamgir Hossain, said they are primarily suspecting that he was suffocated to death.
His body was sent to Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Miscreants set fire to a polling centre in Shariatpur
Miscreants set fire on a polling center in Naria upazila of Shariatpur-2 constituency on Saturday night.
No casualties were reported from the incident except burning three benches.
The incident occurred at Charmohan Sureshwar Primary School, a polling center in ward no. 3 of Gharishar union of Naria.
Noticing the fire, locals brought the fire under control immediately, said Gharisha Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Rab Khan.
Apart from the burning of three benches, there was no damage to the polling station, he added.
Shariatpur Superintendent of Police Mahbubul Alam said miscreants set fire to one of the 378 centers of the district by breaking the window glass. There was no damage to the center.
“Police and other law enforcement agencies have taken adequate security measures. I hope the election will be held in a conducive environment,” the officer added.
