Man sentenced to life in prison for possession of 100gm heroin
A Sirajganj court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the possession of 100 grammes of heroin.
The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default of which he has to suffer three months more in prison.

Judge Fazle Khoda Md Nazir of Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge Court passed the verdict against convict Sumon Ali of Namochak Para village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj on Monday.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Abdur Rahman confirmed the matter.
Sumon Ali was arrested by RAB-12 members on September 24, 2021, in Saidabad of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila. At the time, he was carrying 100 grammes of heroin with him, said the PP.

Later, a case was filed against him at the police station concerned.
After the hearing and testifying in the case, the learned judge gave the verdict against him as the allegations were proved, said the public prosecutor.

Chattogram-12: Two police officers withdrawn for alleged links to independent candidate
Two police officers of Patiya Police Station have been withdrawn for allegedly working for an independent candidate, who is the incumbent MP, in Chattogram-12 parliamentary constituency.
The suspended officers are Sub-Inspector Sanjay Ghosh and ASI Ziaul Haque Zia. The two withdrawn police officers were added to the district police lines on Monday.
Earlier, Patiya Police Station OC Nezam Uddin was withdrawn on the same charge.
Md Jasim Uddin, the current officer-in-charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station, confirmed the withdrawal information of the two officers.
Earlier, on December 29, Awami League South District unit President Motaherul Islam Chowdhury lodged a written complaint with the Chief Election Commissioner against Patiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Md Solaiman, SI Sanjay Ghosh, Md Asadur Rahman, Ratan Kanti Dey, Akram Hossain Sumon, Shimul Chandra Das, Zia Uddin, ASI Md Foyez Ahmed and ASI Anup Kuman.
They were accused of harassing and intimidating Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League leaders and public representatives in various ways in favor of independent candidate Shamsul Haque Chowdhury, the incumbent MP who served as the ruling party whip in the 11 Jatiya Sangshad.
However, when AL revealed its picks for the 12th parliamentary election, he was revealed as one of the 71 AL MPs who were denied the boat symbol this time around. He then decided to run as an independent.

Main accused arrested in case over murdered Magura siblings
Police arrested the main accused in a case filed in connection with the murder of two siblings in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura, from the district town on Monday.
The arrestee was identified as Ashiqur Rahman, 17, son of Faruk Sikder of Panighata in the upazila.

Kalimullah, additional superintendent of Magura Police, said police arrested Ashiqur from the district town in the afternoon.
Local people found the slaughtered bodies of two siblings---Sabuj Molla, 30, and Hridoy Molla, 17—sons of Monju Molla of Panighata Madhyapara village in Mohammadpur upazila—from Panighata Madhyapara Dhokchand field on Sunday morning.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to the local hospital morgue for autopsy.
During primary interrogation, police said Ashiqur confessed that he along with his associates called the two siblings to the field and murdered them after slitting their throat.

25 injured as Chhatra Dal, police clash in Habiganj
At least 25 people, including 10-12 policemen, were injured in a clash between police and BNP student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders and activists in Shayestanagar area of Habiganj on Monday afternoon.
A police van was vandalized at that time.
Habiganj Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Khalilur Rahman said 10-12 policemen were injured in the clash. The situation is calm now.
Locals said Chhatra Dal leaders and activists brought out a rally on the occasion of their founding anniversary. A clash broke out when police obstructed them in the city's Shayestanagar area.

At least 20 people, including policemen, were injured in the clash.
District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Zillur Rahman said that as part of the central program, Chhatra Dal brought out a peaceful rally on the occasion of the founding anniversary. At least 15 leaders and activists were injured in the police attack.

Death in Habiganj police custody: SI withdrawn
A sub-inspector of Baniachong Police Station has been withdrawn in connection with the custodial death of Golam Rabbani, an accused in a theft case, who died at Baniachong Police Station in Habiganj on Tuesday.
Additional Superintendent of Habiganj Police Hasibur Rahman, said the punitive action was taken against Manirul Islam, sub-inspector of Habiganj Police Station on Saturday following a complaint lodged by the family members of Rabbani.
Manirul was attached to the Habiganj Police Lines, he said.
Death in Habiganj police custody: 3-member probe committee formed
On December 28, a three-member probe committee was formed over the death of Golam Rabbani.
Headed by Habiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (admin and finance) Hasibul Islam, the other two members of the committee are Additional Superintendent of Police (Baniachong circle) Palash Ranjan Dey and Court Police Inspector Md Kamrul Islam.
Rabbani, 26, was a resident of the Nandipara area of Baniachong Sadar upazila. Baniachong Police Station Officer-in-Charge Delwar Hossain said he was arrested on charges of stealing an autorickshaw on Tuesday afternoon.
He was found hanging from the ceiling fan inside a room of the police station in Baniachong around 7:30pm the same day, said the OC.
Theft case accused found dead in Habiganj police custody
Later, he was taken to the Baniachong Upazila Health Complex, where the duty doctor declared him dead after an examination.
OC Delwar Hossain said an unnatural death case has been filed in the incident.
There were seven to eight theft cases against Rabbani.

Feni gas fire: One succumbs to injuries at DMCH
A person, who suffered burn injuries in a fire from gas cylinder leakage at a building on Shahidullah Kaiser Road in Feni town, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Sunday noon.
The deceased was identified as Ashish Chandra Sarker, 40, a resident of Dhobaura upazila of Mymensingh. He worked as an accountant for a private company in Feni.
The victim's brother Paritosh Chandra Sarker said Ashish succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the burn unit of DMCH this noon.
Ashish's wife Tumpa Rani Sarker, 30, and their son Rick Sarker ,9, are undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, he said.
He said Ashish's body will be cremated tonight.Around 9:30pm on Tuesday, three members of the family including Ashish Chandra Sarker suffered burns after a fire broke out following leakage in a gas cylinder pipe in the kitchen.

13 crude bombs, 4 firearms, bullets recovered in Bagerhat
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) early Sunday recovered 13 crude bombs, four firearms and bullets from Town Nawapara in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat district.
However, no one was arrested in this connection.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-6 conducted a drive in the area and recovered the bombs, three one-shooter guns, one foreign made pistol and five bullets from near a betel-leaf field in an abandoned condition at the dead of night, said Director of Rab-6 Khulna, Lieutenant Colonel Md Firoj Kabir.

The criminals might have managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the elite force, he said.
Primarily it is suspected that the crude bombs were gathered here to carry out sabotage activities, he added.

Two brothers murdered over 'land dispute' in Magura
Miscreants murdered two brothers allegedly over land dispute in Mohammadpur upazila of Magura district last night, said police.
The deceased were identified as Sabur Ali, 30, and his younger brother Hridoy Ali, sons of Manjur Ali of Patighata village under the upazila.

Confirming the matter, Mohammadpur police station’s Officer-in-charge (OC) Md Borhan Ali said there had been a dispute between the victims’ family and a neighbour over the ownership of a piece of land in the village.
Last night around 8 pm, someone went to their house asked the brothers to come out, he said quoting the family, adding that the brothers didn’t return home.
Later, locals spotted the bodies of the brothers in a crop field, a short distance from their house, the OC said. Their throats were slit with sharp weapon.

Being informed, a police team rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and subsequently sent them to Magura Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, the police officer informed.
Though no one has so far been arrested in this connection, he said an investigation is underway to identify the accused.

Teknaf-St Martin shipping service to be suspended from Jan 6-8 for election
Vessel service on Teknaf-Saint Martin route will remain suspended from January 6 due to the 12th parliamentary election slated for January 7.
Cox's Bazar Additional District Magistrate Yamin Hossain confirmed the matter on Saturday (December 30) noon.
He said no tourist vessels will be allowed to run on the route from January 6 to January 8 due to the national election.
At the same time, all the hotel-motels and guest houses in Cox's Bazar will remain closed from 12:00 am on January 6th to 12:00 am on January 7th, he added.
"If everything goes well, ship service will resume from January 9," said Yamin Hossain .
