A 35-year-old man died, another sustained injuries when their motorcycle lost control and hit a tree in Moheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah on Wednesday morning. The deceased was identified as Naeem Hossain, son of Rafiqul Islam and a resident of Bhalaipur village in the upazila. Naeem’s cousin, Salim, was critically injured in the accident. Dr Farzana Nazneen Shammi of Moheshpur Upazila Health Complex said, "Salim's condition is critical, and he has been referred to Jashore General Hospital for advanced treatment." Witnesses said Naeem and Salim were travelling to Moheshpur from Bhalaipur on a motorcycle. As they attempted to overtake another vehicle near the Moheshpur Upazila Health Complex, they lost control, and the motorcycle crashed into a roadside tree. Locals immediately rescued the injured duo and rushed them to Moheshpur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Naeem dead.

A case has been filed against 124 people, including former President Abdul Hamid and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing them of their involvement in attacks during the student movement in Kishoreganj. Tahmul Islam, son of Abu Taher Bhuiya from Uttar Latibabad in Sadar Upazila, lodged the case at Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station on Tuesday evening, said officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun. Prominent figures such as Sheikh Rehana, Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Saima Wazed Putul are also named in the case. Khaleda, Tarique acquitted in Zia Orphanage graft case According to sources, 50 cases have been filed in Kishoreganj district since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year, with 11 lodged at Sadar Police Station alone. This marks the first instance of former President Abdul Hamid being named as an accused, listed as the third accused in this particular case. The case statement alleges that the accused, operating from both domestic and international locations, orchestrated mass killings nationwide and supplied weapons, including firearms and crude bombs, to suppress the student movement. On August 4 last year, the accused allegedly attacked a student procession at Gourangabazar in Kishoreganj town, leaving several people, including the plaintiff, injured. “After receiving prolonged treatment for my injuries, I have finally come forward to file this case,” said Tahmul.  

A newly-wed wife was strangled to death allegedly by her husband over dowry at Madhabkati village in Sadar upazila of Satkhira district early Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Khadiza Khatun, 19, wife of Amirul Islam of the village. Quoting relatives of the deceased, Saminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said Amirul, son of Elai Box got married to Khadiza, daughter of Siddiqur Rahman alias Siddik Mali three months ago. After some days of their marriage, Amirul put pressure on Khadiza to bring Tk 2 lakh as dowry from her father. Amirul used to torture Khadiza mentally and physically when she refused to bring the money. Over the issue, Amirul picked up a quarrel with Khadiza around 3am on Tuesday and hit her with a stick on the head. Student arrested in Feni over killing domestic help Later he strangled her to death by smothering her face with a pillow. Local people locked Amirul at his house and handed him over to the police. On information, police recovered the body and arrested Amirul. The body bore several injury marks, said OC.      

Police arrested seven members of a suspected inter-district robber gang with sharp weapons in connection with the robbery and rape of a housewife in Mohadevpur upazila of Naogaon. Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Safiful Sarowar revealed this at a press conference at the latter’s office on Tuesday. The arrestees were Shariful Islam Pacha, 29, Tarek Hossain, 26, Solaiman Ali, 38, Sagar Hossain, 19, Rubel Sardar, 28, Ripon Ali, 30, Sagar Hossain, 19 (2). All hail from several upazilas of the district. The police super said a gang of robbers stormed into a house in Khajur village of the upazila at night on December 29 last. Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Tuesday arrested an Indian national along with 18 gold bars from Mujibnagar bordering area in Meherpur district. The arrestee was identified as Nur Hossain, 48, son of Sonai Sheikh of India’s Nadia district. Tipped off, a team of BGB-6 Battalion of Chuadanga conducted a drive in Mujibnagar filed near 104/5 no pillar around 10:30 am and arrested Nur while he was trying to flee the scene sensing the presence of the border guards, said Commanding officer of BGB-6 Lieutenant Colonel Syed Mohammad Zahidur Rahman. Bangladeshi man injured in BSF firing along Patgram border Later, the BGB men recovered 18 gold bars worth Tk 2 crore kept in three packets. A case was filed with Mujibnagar Police Station. The seized gold bars were deposited to the Meherpur Treasury office.

A former councilor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) and his son were arrested from Bashundhara Residential area in the capital early Monday. The arrestees were identified as Matiur Rahman Moti, 55, former councilor of NCC and a Jubo League leader and his son Mashiur Rahman, 29. Sujon Haque, officer-in-charge of Bhatara Police Station, said police arrested Motiur, a close aide of Shamim Osman and his son from a flat in Bashundhara Residential area around 2am. They were wanted in several cases filed in Dhaka and Narayanganj. Abdullah Al Masud, additional superintendent of Narayanganj District Police, said both of them were wanted in different cases including murder. They will be shown arrested in the cases, he said. Matiur is a president of Siddhirganj thana unit Jubo League and he elected the councilor of No 6 ward from NCC twice. Rokeya Rahman, wife of Matiur, said her son Mashiur was not involved in politics.

An activist of Jamaat-e-Islami was killed and 18 others were injured in a clash between the supporters of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami over an enmity of electing the president of the school managing committee at Mirpur upazila of Kushtia district on Monday. The deceased was identified as Khokon Molla, 35, son of Nousher Molla of Burapara in the upazila. Mominul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said there has been enmity between Nasim Reza Mukul, ameer of Amla union unit Jamaat-e-Islami and local BNP activist Rashed Mahmud Nasir centering the president post of the ad hoc committee of Murapara Secondary High School committee. 18 injured in clash between local outfits of Jamaat and BNP in Kushtia A tense situation has been prevailing in the area over the committee as both Mukul and Nasir were the candidates for the post. A meeting is scheduled to be held over the issue on the school premises on Monday morning. On Monday morning, a clash ensued between the two groups when they gathered in the area centering the meeting, leaving 19 people injured. Of the injured six people got admitted at Mirpur Upazila Health Complex while the others got admitted to the 150-bed Kushtia General Hospital. Among the injured, Khokon died on way to Dhaka Ibn Sina Hospital from Kushtia General Hospital, said Prof Mawlana Abul Hashem, ameer of Kushtia district unit Jamaat-e-Islami. The leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami also condemned the killing of their fellow and demanded exemplary punishment of the killers.        

A speeding truck ploughed into a roadside house leaving an elderly woman killed and her grandson injured in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat early Monday. The deceased, Nuri Begum, and the injured, Abdullah, were asleep when the accident occurred in Patikapara Bottala of the upazila, said Mahmudun-Nabi, officer-in-charge (OC) of Hatibandha Police Station. 10 injured as Anti-Discrimination Students Movement clashes with general students at Ananda Mohan College in Mymensingh The truck, loaded with goods, veered off the road after the driver lost control, ploughing into the tin shed house leaving Nuri Begum dead on the spot, the OC said. Fire service personnel were alerted and arrived at the scene, rescuing Abdullah after around an hour and a half of efforts. However, Nuri Begum’s body was recovered about four hours later.

A clash broke out between the Anti-Discrimination Student movement and general students at Ananda Mohan College in Mymensingh over the college's annual seat fee. At least 10 individuals from both sides were injured in the incident, leading the college authorities to close both the college and hostel for three days. The identities of the injured could not be known immediately. The altercation occurred on Sunday evening (January 12), after tensions rose over the college's annual seat fee of Tk7,000 , which is higher than the Tk 5,000 fee at other colleges. A meeting was planned between the principal and the students to discuss the issue, but instead of meeting with the general students, the principal spoke with leaders from the anti-discrimination movement and Chhatra Dal. This sparked resentment among the general students, leading to an altercation between the two groups. A chase ensued, resulting in the clash. Police and army personnel responded to the scene and brought the situation under control. Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, said that the situation is currently calm, with police deployed on the campus to prevent further incidents. “An investigation would be conducted, and those responsible would be brought to justice,” he added.

A 40-year-old Bangladeshi man was injured in firing by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on Saturday night, authorities said on Sunday. The injured man, Shahidul Islam, is the son of Jabed Ali from Kashirdanga village, Jagatber union, in the upazila. BGB intervenes in BSF's attempt to build fence at Lalmonirhat border According to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the incident took place around 11:30 PM when a group of smugglers, including Shahidul, was returning to Bangladesh from India with cattle. At that time, BSF personnel from the Buraburi camp opened fire on the group, resulting in Shahidul being shot. His companions managed to rescue him and flee back to Bangladesh, the BGB added. He is currently receiving treatment at a secret location in Rangpur. 25-year-old injured in BSF firing along C’ganj border Subedar Jahangir Alam, Shamshernagar Company Commander of the 61st (Tista-2) Battalion of BGB, said that a flag meeting was held at the border on Sunday morning regarding the incident. The commander of the Mirrapa BSF camp and other officials attended the meeting. "We have protested this incident," he said.
