A student coordinator was injured in an attack in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat on Thursday morning. Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident. The victim, Golam Azam (24), was assaulted near his home in the Kotali area of the municipality while walking on the road. The attackers, identified as neighbors Dedul Mia (58), his son Sajib Mia alias Tiger (25) and Rahidul Islam (31), reportedly beat him over a personal dispute, according to police and locals. Azam’s elder brother, Masud Alam, filed a case over the incident and Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ashrafuzzaman Sarkar confirmed the arrests of Sajib Mia alias Tiger and Dedul Mia later that day. A case has been filed in connection with the attack on a convoy of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement’s March for Unity in Bagerhat’s Mollahat upazila. Hridoy Gharami, a representative of the movement, lodged a complaint on Thursday, naming 74 individuals and 45 to 50 unidentified others as accused. Among the accused, Kalu Farazi, a transport worker in the Madrasaghat area, has been identified as the prime suspect, said Mollahat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shafiqul Islam. Five individuals—Mostaq Munshi (45), Abdur Rahman, Ujjwal Sarkar, Sabbir, and Hanif—have been arrested in connection with the case and were sent to the Bagerhat Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. Police have launched a raid to arrest the remaining suspects, the OC added. The incident occurred around 11:30 am on Tuesday when a dispute broke out between the convoy of students and the staff of a bus in the Madrasaghat area over giving way. A total of 64 Indian fishermen, who were imprisoned in Bagerhat district jail for illegally fishing in Bangladeshi waters, have been released. The fishermen were handed over to the Coast Guard and police officials on Thursday. According to Bagerhat District Jail Superintendent Shankar Kumar Majumder, 48 of the fishermen were arrested on October 17, 2024 while the remaining were arrested on November 20, 2024 for fishing illegally in Bangladeshi territory. They were handed over to the Mongla police station, and cases were filed against them under the Marine Fisheries Act. A suspected member of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was killed reportedly in a gunfight between the members of UPDF and joint forces in Kichingchara of Langadu upazila of Rangamati district early Thursday. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. The throat-slit body of a ward-level leader of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was discovered on Thursday morning in Gangni upazila of Meherpur district. Police recovered the body of Alamgir Hossain, 45, from the Raimantala playground, where it had been left overnight, said officer-in-charge (OC) of Gangni Police Station Bani Israil. Youth stabbed to death in Narayanganj Alamgir Hossain, the convenor of Ward No. 1 unit of Gangni municipality Jubo Dal, had recently returned home from Dubai where he had been working, three months ago. A two-member convening committee, with Alamgir as its convenor, had been formed two months earlier.

Locals noticed the message on Wednesday evening and urged the authorities concerned to take prompt action. The committee also includes Assistant Upazila Education Officer Md. Firozul Islam and Mahmudur Rahman, assistant programme officer of the ICT Department in Jibannagar upazila. The committee has been asked to submit a report within two working days, he added. Shafiqul Islam, acting headmaster of the school, said that the digital screen had been installed in 2016 by a private company. Previously, it displayed educational messages in green, and there had never been any issues. He said the provocative message appeared unexpectedly and was immediately reported to the administration and the upazila education officer. He added that the electrical connection to the screen had been disconnected and experts would examine the equipment. Upazila Education Officer Ismail Hossain said that the board operated through an app, and the message may have been posted by someone who hacked the app. He assured that an investigation was underway to determine the source of the incident. Mamun Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jibannagar Police Station, said that a police team conducted an inspection at the scene. He said that the authorities are actively investigating the matter.

Three people were killed and another was injured in a road accident in Mohanpur upazila of Rajshahi on Wednesday evening. The deceased were identified as Kawsar, 19, son of Azim Uddin from Bankura village in Naogaon’s Manda upazila; Kawsar Rahman, 18, son of Sikender Ali from Chakbalu village; and Palash, son of Asab Ali, also from Chakbalu village. The accident occurred on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway in the Kalitala area of Kesharhat municipality. Critically injured Santu, 30, is undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. A 20-year-old young man was stabbed to death and two others were injured in an attack by miscreants during a New Year’s Eve concert in Fatullah area of Narayanganj district. The deceased was identified as Hridoy, son of Habib Mia of Pagla Bou Bazar area. Shariful Islam, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Police Station, said Hridoy along with his friends were celebrating New Year’s Ever at a field at Pagla Bou Bazar Station area. 4 suspected robbers lynched in Narayanganj Around 12:15 am, a group of young men, numbering 7-8, appeared there, triggering a heated argument among them. At one stage, they stabbed Hridoy with a sharp weapon and beat him and his friends up mercilessly. Later, they were taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared Hridoy dead. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police are investigating the incident.    

A Jubo Dal activist was hacked to death in Patharghata, Barguna district on Wednesday. Jasim Uddin Rana, convener of Patharghata upazila Jubo Dal, said that the deceased, Nasir, was a general member of Ward No. 9 unit of Jubo Dal. His father's name is Shahjahan. According to locals, Nasir was attacked with sharp weapons by Chhatra League activists Rabbi and Hasan in the Kalmegha Nuria area while he was on his way to his in-laws' house in the afternoon. The attackers fled the scene after the assault, leaving Nasir dead on the spot. Upon receiving the news, local BNP leaders and activists, including Patharghata upazila BNP convener Chowdhury Mohammad Faruk, rushed to the hospital. Md. Mehedi Hasan, Officer-in-Charge of Patharghata Police Station, said that the body was recovered and sent to the morgue for an autopsy.

Tragedy struck in Baraigram upazila of Natore on Tuesday night as a tenth-grade student fell to his death from the rooftop of a three-story building while celebrating the New Year. The deceased, identified as Ishtiak, was a student at St. Joseph High School in the Bonpara area and was set to take his SSC examinations this year. Students motorcade comes under attack in Bagerhat; 20 injured According to family members and locals, Ishtiak was celebrating with friends on the rooftop of his friend’s residence in the Kalikapur area. The incident occurred when Ishtiak, reportedly distracted by his mobile phone, lost his footing, leading to a fatal fall. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a local clinic, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival, said Sirajul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Baraigram Police Station.
