Manchester United and Tottenham put their inconsistent domestic campaigns aside and advanced to the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday. Diogo Dalot tapped in a precise cross by Kobbie Mainoo on the hour mark and Mainoo netted eight minutes later for a 2-0 victory over Romanian champion FCSB in Bucharest. Tottenham got goals from academy graduates to beat Swedish club Elfsborg 3-0 in London. Spurs waited until the 70th minute for substitute Dane Scarlett to break the deadlock before adding two more through substitute Damola Ajayi and 17-year-old Mikey Moore. José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce avoided an embarrassing early exit with a 2-2 away draw at Denmark’s Midtjylland. The result sent both into the playoffs. The hosts were 20th while Midtjylland took 24th, giving Mourinho a chance to add to his European trophies. Neymar returns to Brazilian club Santos after termination of contract in Saudi Arabia Ajax ended a three-game losing streak by handing Galatasaray its first defeat, 2-1 with both teams making the playoffs. Hoffenheim's 4-3 away win at Anderlecht was not enough for the Bundesliga team to advance. The Belgian club finished 10th. Real Sociedad, FCSB, Porto, AZ Alkmaar, Twente and PAOK are among other teams that advanced.

Gotham FC and U.S. team veteran Crystal Dunn have agreed to part ways. The National Women's Soccer League team said Tuesday that the decision comes as "Dunn pursues a new opportunity.” No details about the opportunity were announced. “As I turn the page and prepare for a new chapter, I am filled with excitement for what lies ahead,” Dunn posted on Instagram. “The journey continues and I am committed to reaching new heights and pushing myself to be the absolute best version of who I am. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m ready to embrace this next phase of my career with passion, grace, and joy.” Dunn was signed as a free agent by Gotham FC in late 2023. She played one season with the club, appearing in 23 matches with one goal and two assists. Before Gotham, Dunn played for the Portland Thorns, taking most of 2022 off for the birth of her son. She also had stints with the North Carolina Courage, Chelsea in the English Women's Super League and the Washington Spirit. Postecoglou uncertain about Tottenham future after another alarming loss “Crystal is an accomplished player who has achieved so much in her career,” said Gotham general manager Yael Averbuch West. “We wish her all the best in the next chapter of her career, and we thank her for her contributions to our club.” Dunn played on the U.S team that won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics last summer. She was also on the squad that won the 2019 Women's World Cup. Dunn, 32, has appeared in 154 games for the United States, with 25 goals and 20 assists.

Neymar has agreed to return to Santos nearly 12 years after he left the Brazilian team, club president Marcelo Teixeira said Tuesday. The Brazil striker confirmed earlier that his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal had been terminated by mutual consent. He had an injury-marred spell at Al-Hilal, where he played only seven matches and scored once. Neymar won six titles with his boyhood club Santos, including a Copa Libertadores trophy in 2011. Santos is a beachfront city outside São Paulo. “It is the time (to come back), Neymar. It is time for you to come back to your people. To our home, to the club in our hearts,” Teixeira said in his social media channels. “Welcome, our boy Ney! A boy of Vila (Belmiro, Santos’ stadium). Come back to be happy again with the white and black shirt. The Santos nation awaits you with open arms.” Neymar, once hailed as one of the world’s best players, spent much of his time in Saudi Arabia on the sidelines due to an ACL injury he picked playing for Brazil in October 2023. São Paulo media reported that the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star is expected to return to Brazil this week and reintroduce himself to Santos fans within days. Neymar became the most expensive player in soccer history when he transferred from Barcelona to PSG for 222 million euros (then $262 million) in 2017. Neymar’s spokeswoman, Day Franco, told The Associated Press the player had no immediate comment. However, Neymar responded with a heart gif to a post of Kely Nascimento, one of the daughters of three-time World Cup winner Pelé, celebrating his return to Santos. “(My father) must be taking bicycle kicks in heaven after finding out that our boy is coming back home,” Nascimento said on Instagram. Saudi Arabia club Al-Hilal says contract with Neymar has been terminated by mutual consent A video published by Al-Hilal on Tuesday evening shows Neymar giving a farewell speech. “Today I am very happy to be able to go, return home. To my country,” Neymar told his former teammates, without mentioning Santos. “It was a pleasure for me to play for this club. It was a short time, things were not as I expected. I could not help you on the pitch as I wanted.” Santos was relegated to Brazil’s second division in 2023 and was promoted again in the latest season. Neymar’s most recent match was played in November. Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus had repeatedly cast doubts about the striker’s form to play. Neymar left the Saudi Arabian league after playing just seven games in 17 months following his big-money move to the oil-rich kingdom. Al-Hilal said Monday it reached an agreement with Neymar to terminate his contract by mutual consent. “I gave everything to play and I wish we enjoyed better times on the pitch together,” Neymar said in a message on social media. “To Saudi, thank you for giving me and my family a new home and new experiences. I now know the real Saudi and have friends for life.” Despite Neymar’s injury, Al-Hilal still managed to win last season’s Saudi league. The Brazilian’s contract was due to expire after this year’s FIFA Club World Cup, which will be played between June 15 and July 13 in the United States. The striker joined the Saudi club from PSG in August 2023 for 90 million euros ($94 million). His salary was reportedly one of the biggest in world soccer as well. But Neymar picked up his ACL injury playing for Brazil only months after he joined Al-Hilal. Neymar returned in October but said in different interviews there were doubts over whether he would stay for the rest of the season. Barcelona's attack flourishes under Flick, setting records in all competitions Santos fans have already been expecting Neymar’s return. Since last week, they have posted a video of a man with the voice of legendary three-time World Cup winner Pelé, who died in 2022 at age 82, asking Neymar to return and wear his historic No. 10 shirt. In June, during a visit to one of his social projects in Brazil, the striker denied he was eyeing a return to the club, calling the idea "a total lie, there’s no plans. With the day's well merited victory, Bashundhara Kings finished Group A champions securing nine points from four group matches. Both the Brothers Union Club and Fortis FC have secured seven points each after playing all the four Group A matches, but Brothers Union finished group runners up to reach the qualifiers 2 by  virtue of head to head advantage, beating Fortis earlier. Federation Cup Football: Rahmatganj, Dhaka Abahani Ltd maintain all-win record beating their rivals Bashundhara Kings will now play Group B champions either Dhaka Abahani Ltd or Rahmatganj MFS to reach the final. In Group B, Rahmatganj MFS and Dhaka Abahani Limited maintained all–win run to reach the play-off stage (qualifiers/eliminator) with one match to spare and will meet each other on February 4 to decide the group champions.

Flick achieved a milestone in Sunday’s 7-1 thrashing of Valencia, becoming the second-fastest Barcelona coach to reach 100 goals, accomplishing the feat in 32 games. Only Helenio Herrera did it quicker, in 31 matches in the 1950s. Flick surpassed Luis Enrique and Tito Vilanova, who needed 34 games, and Pep Guardiola, who reached the mark in 37. Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou acknowledged there was uncertainty over his future after his underperforming team was beaten for a fourth straight Premier League game — to an opponent which had lost its previous seven matches in the competition. After a 2-1 home loss to Leicester on Sunday, Tottenham — a club in English soccer's so-called “Big Six” which attempted to join a breakaway Super League of major European clubs in 2021 — was languishing in 15th place in the 20-team league. Tottenham's seven-match winless run in the league is its worst since 2008. Postecoglou said Tottenham's current situation was “as low as we've been” this season and is banking on the imminent return of a number of key players — especially center backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven — to help turn round the team's fortunes. Asked if he thinks he should be given that time, the Australian coach said: "Who knows mate? I reckon there’s a fair chunk that will say ‘no.’ “When you're a manager of a football club, you can be very vulnerable and isolated. I don't feel that. There were few chances throughout the match, with even the goal having a hint of fortune about it as Martinez took aim from long range and saw the ball loop up off Fulham midfielder Sasa Lukic's outstretched boot and fly over goalkeeper Bernd Leno. Since Ruben Amorim said last weekend his team was "the worst, maybe, in the history of Manchester United,” it has won back-to-back games — Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday and Fulham three days later. Mbeumo's retaken penalty Brentford beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in a contest between midtable clubs which turned on a retaken penalty. Vanderbilt was fined $500,000 by the Southeastern Conference on Sunday for allowing fans to storm the court Saturday after the Commodores' 74-69 victory over No. 9 Kentucky. Vanderbilt was penalized for a third offense under the conference’s revised access to competition area policy. The fine will be paid to the University of Kentucky. Manchester City's Premier League revival gathered pace after beating Chelsea 3-1 moved Pep Guardiola's team up to fourth in the standings on Saturday. The four-time defending champion remains 12 points behind leader Liverpool, but its unbeaten run in the league extended to six games after a stunning run of defeats at the end of last year. Still, City had to come from behind at Etihad Stadium after a mistake from debutant Abdukodir Khusanov allowed Chelsea to go ahead inside three minutes. “Three points. We needed it," Guardiola said after City fought back through goals by Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. “Emotionally, they come back incredibly well.” Liverpool kept up its charge towards the title by thrashing Ipswich 4-1 and staying six points clear. Arsenal was second after winning at Wolverhampton 1-0, but third-placed Nottingham Forest was stunned by Bournemouth 5-0 on the south coast. Fifth-placed Newcastle came back from a goal down to beat Southampton 3-1, with Alexander Isak scoring twice. City revival A record-extending fifth title looks beyond City but there are positive signs for Guardiola after the midseason collapse. One win in 13 games, including nine losses from October to December, plunged City down the table in the league and the Champions League. But victory against Chelsea lifted City back into the top four, even after a woeful start when Khusanov's weak header allowed Noni Madueke to open the scoring. It took four minutes for Arsenal to capitalize, with Riccardo Calafiori hitting the winner with left-footed volley from inside the box. “We’re not going to give up on the title race," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. "We’re going to face any challenge, any situation like we have done today. Whether we win or not, that is a different question. We are going to try 100%, I guarantee we are going to be there." Forest stunned Forest has been one of the surprise stories of the league but Bournemouth has quietly been putting together an impressive run of its own.
