The Bangabandhu 46th National Athletics Championship'2022, organised by Bangladesh Athletics Federation (BAF) begins on Friday (December 23) at the Bangladesh Army Stadium in Banani here.  The most attractive events of the meet --men's and women's 100-meter sprints--will be held at 4:30 and 4:45 pm respectively on the day. The marathon race of the meet already completed Saturday ( Dec 17) morning marching with Bangabandhu Victory Day National Marathon. Tofazzel Hossain Miah will inaugurate the three-day meet in the afternoon at a simple ceremony to be chaired by BAF Vice President Nuruddin Chowdhury Nayan, MP.    Some 500 athletes from 64 districts, eight divisions, universities, education boards, BKSP, BJMC and other affiliated organizations are expected to compete in the 40 events of the meet--22 for the men and 18 for the women. The organizer will award the top three athletes of all the 40 events of the meet with Tk 3,000 as first prize, Tk 2,000 as 2nd prize and Tk 1,000 as the 3rd prize.  Besides, the record holder athletes will be awarded with a prize money of Tk 5,000 each.

The Bangabandhu Asian Central Zone Under-23 Men's International Volleyball Championship'2022 began here on Thursday (Dec 22) at the Shaheed Suhrawardy National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur. Four countries---Nepal, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan and hosts Bangladesh are taking part in the competition. LGRD and Co Operatives Minister M Tajul Islam inaugurated the four-nation meet as the chief guest Thursday afternoon.  Read more: Asian Men's U-20 Volleyball: Bangladesh finish 5th with win over China MP(Member of Parliament) Elias Uddin Mollah was the special guest at the function chaired by the President of Bangladesh Volleyball Federation (BVF) and Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam. BVF Senior Vice President and Tournament Committee Chairman Mohammad Younus, BVF general secretary Ashiqur Rahman Miku, Unique Group chairman Mohammad Nur Ali were also present on the occasion.   In two opening day's matches, Bangladesh taking on Nepal while Sri Lanka playing against Kyrgyzstan.

BAF General Secretary Advocate Abdur Rakib Montu was also present. The organiser will award the top three athletes of all the 40 events of the meet with Tk3,000 as the first prize, Tk2,000 as the second prize and Tk1,000 as the third prize. Besides, the record holder athletes will be awarded prize money of Tk5,000 each.  

Bangladesh Hockey Federation preliminarily announced a 25 members squad to form a Bangladesh team for the eight-nation Men's Junior Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) Cup (Under-21) Hockey Tournament to be held in Muscat, Oman from January 6-12 next year. Selected players have been asked to report to team manager Hazi Mohammad Humayan on Tuesday (December 20) at 4 pm at the federation office. Earlier, Bangladesh put in four-team Pool B  alongwith Sri Lanka, Hong Kong China and Uzbekistan while Pool A team comprises hosts Oman, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Indonesia. Bangladesh will play Hong Kong in the inaugural match on January 6,  play Sri Lanka on January 7 and meet Uzbekistan on January 9 in the pool matches. German tennis legend Boris Becker has returned to Germany after serving eight months in prison in Britain, his lawyer said Thursday. The 55-year-old German, who has lived in Britain since 2012, was released on Thursday morning and traveled back to Germany shortly thereafter. Becker “has thus served his sentence and is not subject to any penal restrictions in Germany,” his lawyer, Christian-Oliver Moser, said in a statement. He did not give additional details about Becker’s location in Germany.  Read more: Roger Federer’s tearful goodbye to tennis at 41 The three-time Wimbledon champion ​​had been sentenced to 30 months in prison in April for illicitly transferring large amounts of money and hiding assets after he was declared bankrupt. He would normally have had to serve half of his sentence before being eligible for release, but was released early under a fast-track deportation program for foreign nationals. He had been convicted by London’s Southwark Crown Court on four charges under the Insolvency Act, including removal of property, concealing debt and two counts of failing to disclose estate. Becker rose to stardom in 1985 at the age of 17 when he became the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon singles title. The former world number one was declared bankrupt in June 2017.

Two Indian shuttlers--Gagan Balyan and Surya Charisma Tamiri --emeregd men's and women's singles champions in the Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh Junior International (Badminton) Series that concluded on Thursday (December 15) at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Stadium here State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam MP was the chief guest at the day's closing function and later he distributed the prizes. Gagan clinched the men's singles crown beating his compatriot Anishraj Rajkumar by 21-19, 21-18 point in the final while Surya lifed the women's singles title beating her countrymate Navya Kanderi ny 21-18. 21-20 point in the final. The men's doubles title also went to Indian pair Venkata Uneeth Krishna and Shashank Chhetri, who beat another Indian pair Charan Ganesh Anupoju and Mohith Kothapalli by 19-21, 21-15, 21-14 point in the final. However, Bangladeshi pair Nasima Khatun and Smrity Rajbongshi won the women's doubles title of the meet defeating their compatriot Mathena Madhurjya Biswas and Sheikh Pretha partner by 21-18, 10-21. 21-15 point in all Bangladesh final. Indian partner Vignesh Thathineni and Rashmitha Donepudi clnched the mixed doubles crown beating their Bangladeshi rivals Nazmul Islam Joy and Nasima Khatun by 21-6, 21-13 points in the event's final.

Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Ansar & VDP team retained the men's and women's titles of the Victory Day Handball Tournament'2022 eliminating their rivals in the finals at the Shaheed (Capt) M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium here on Thursday. Former Rajuk chairman and former vice president of Bangladesh Handball Federation (BHF) Abdur Rahman witnessed the day's final as the chief guest and later he distributed the trophies at the closing function, chaired by BHF general secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor. Border Guard Bangladesh clinched the men's crown for the 5th time, four time in a row, beating their traditional rivals Bangladesh Ansar & VDP team by 32-26 goal in the final Thursday afternoon. Two Bangladeshi swimmers – M Asif Reza and Sonia Akter Tumpa – were eliminated in the heats in men's and women's 100-metre freestyle of the 16th FINA World Swimming Championship in Australia's Melbourne Wednesday. In the day's event, Asif's 52.91 seconds was his best time. But, with a time of 01:05.05 seconds, Sonia could not exceed her best time – 1:04.55 seconds. However, they will compete in their next event of 50-metre freestyle swimming on Friday. It will return home on December 20.

Defending champions Boarder Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Bangladesh Ansar & VDP tean reached the men's final of the Victory Day Handball Tournament' 2022 eliminating their rivals at the Shaheed (Capt) M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium here on Wednesday. In the women's section, Holders Bangladesh Ansar & VDP and Badalgachi Handball Association qualified for the final beating their rivals at the same venue this afternoon. Both the men's and women's finals and the prize distribution ceremony of the meet will be held on Thursday (December 15) afternoon at the same venue. The Bangabandhu 47th National Chess Championship 2022, organised by Bangladesh Chess Federation under the financial support of Abul Khair Group, begins on Thursday (December 15) from 3 pm at the Bangladesh Chess Federation Hall-Room here. The number drawing ceremony and technical meeting of the meet will be held on Wednesday.
