San Francisco, Aug 29 (AP/UNB) — Apple is apologizing for allowing outsiders to listen to snippets of people's recorded conversations with its digital assistant Siri, a practice that undermined its attempts to position itself as a trusted steward of privacy.
As part of the apology posted Wednesday, Apple reiterated an earlier pledge to stop keeping audio recorded through Siri unless consumers give their permission.
When permission is granted, Apple said only its own employees will be allowed to review audio to help improve the service. Previously, the company hired contractors to listen to some recordings.
"We realize we haven't been fully living up to our high ideals, and for that we apologize," Apple said.
Apple would not say how it will seek permission. In the past, the Cupertino, California, company has typically requested permissions through prompts during software update installations.
In recent months, Facebook, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple have all acknowledged that people have been reviewing users' interactions with artificial intelligence assistants in order to improve the services. But users aren't typically aware that humans and not just computers are reviewing audio.
The use of humans to listen to audio recordings is particularly troubling to privacy experts because it increases the chances that a rogue employee or contractor could leak details of what is being said, including parts of sensitive conversations.
The backlash to the industry practice prompted Facebook and Google to stop relying on people to transcribe recorded conversations. Amazon is continuing the practice unless users of its digital assistant Alexa explicitly demand that humans be blocked from listening. Microsoft also is still doing it, too, contending it has adequate privacy safeguards in place for the Cortana digital assistant.
Apple intends to continue to rely upon computer-generated transcripts of what's being said to Siri as part of effort to improve services, even if a user hasn't explicitly granted permission, or opted in.
Unlike Facebook, Google and Amazon, which track what people are doing and where they are going to sell ads and merchandise, Apple has conspicuously emphasized that that it has no interest in peering into its customers' lives.
CEO Tim Cook repeatedly has declared the company's belief that "privacy is a fundamental human right," a phrase that cropped up again in Apple's apology.

Nairobi, Aug 25 (Xinhua/UNB) -- Kenya has hailed the important role that Chinese technology firm Huawei has played in boosting the youth's Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills.
Katherine Getao, CEO of ICT Authority told a technology forum in Nairobi that the Chinese firm is currently offering world class ICT training locally to Kenyan students.
"I am very grateful to Huawei for its cooperation with Kenya in the area of capacity building in the ICT sector that will go along way to make the county a digital economy," said Getao during the Huawei technology workshop for government ICT.
She said that a significant portion of the ICT training is focused on youth from marginalized communities.
"Each ICT training, no matter how technical the training is, always has at least 30 percent of the participants being female," Getao added.
She revealed that Huawei is also the key contractor for the country's national fiber optic network.
"The national fibre optic network is playing a key role in bridging the country's digital divide because commercial telecoms rely on the infrastructure to provide broadband to the remote areas of the country," said Getao.
She noted that the Chinese firm has been able to become a competitive tech firm due to its responsiveness to customer needs.
The Kenyan official said that Huawei is also key partner for Kenya because it has developed the latest ICT products and services through investments in research.
She observed that Huawei is a good corporate citizen due to its active corporate social responsibility programs targeted at Kenya's less unfortunate citizens.
Marcus Ge, senior information technology solution manager of Huawei Kenya, told Xinhua in Nairobi on Friday evening that its products are already an enabler in Kenya's government departments, transport, manufacturing and banking sectors.
"Our latest products including the Wifi 6 series products will help transform Kenya into a digital economy," Ge said on the sidelines of the Huawei technology workshop for government ICT.
Ge revealed that Huawei products also have the ability to enable Kenya to successfully deploy and take advantage of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
He observed that the Chinese firm devotes significant resources in research and development to produce innovative products that are now exceed even global ICT standards.
Ge said that Huawei is already a major supplier of hardware and software to Kenya's proposed technology city Konza technology city, which is located approximately 56 km south east of the capital Nairobi.
He noted that Kenya remains a key market for Huawei because it is the technology hub for East Africa.
"We want to provide high quality products that will improve the lives of Kenyans," he added.
The Chinese technology firm entered the Kenyan market over 20 years and is now a dominant player in the ICT space.
According to Ge, Huawei products have gained acceptability in the east African nation because they are at the fore front of the ICT revolution.
San Francisco, Aug 25 (AP/UNB) — Apple believes some of its zealous customers will treasure its new titanium credit card so much that they will spend time polishing its white finish.
That's why Apple has posted instructions on how to clean the card properly and warned that some materials might leave blemishes that are difficult to remove.
The list of potential hazards includes leather and denim, prompting some people to conclude Apple's credit card is so special that it can't be stored in the wallets and pockets where most other credit cards reside.
But the company says it merely wants people to know that the dyes used in some types of leather and denim can leave stains. Those discoloring marks are unlikely in most kinds of wallets and jeans, something Apple alluded to in its post by advising that the card can be kept in a wallet or pocket made of "soft materials."
The reverence Apple seemed to be according its card triggered widespread derision on Twitter and elsewhere on the internet.
"Do not look directly at Apple Card," Alex Stamos, a former top security executive at Yahoo and Facebook, mocked in a tweet late Wednesday . "Do not speak to Apple Card. Do not denigrate Apple Card in Its Holy Presence."
In reality, Apple's cleaning instructions for the card mirrors the same practice it applies for its iPhone, iPad, Mac computers, ear buds and all other physical products. But while it's common for people to clean those devices, few consumers spend time sprucing up their credits cards.
Apple describes a two-step cleaning process involving microfiber cloths and isopropyl alcohol and includes a list of inappropriate cleaners. The instructions also warn against touching another credit card or "potentially abrasive objects" like coins or keys.
The Apple Card, announced in March in partnership with Goldman Sachs, started rolling out in the U.S. this month. Though industry experts say the card's financial benefits mirror many of those already out there for consumers, Apple is positioning it as a refreshing change from the thousands of other credit cards that have been available for decades.
In one of the biggest differences, the card is designed to be primarily used with the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch. But at retail stores, that requires merchants to accept Apple Pay. Apple and Goldman Sachs are giving people the option of a physical card to use when Apple Pay isn't an option.
The card is made of titanium and a sleek white finish to give it added flair and prestige. It's a strategy that has worked well for other high-end cards made of metallic alloys, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card .
