A Faridpur court on Monday sentenced a man and his mother to life imprisonment for killing his wife, Sumi Akter, in 2011.

Faridpur District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Badiuzzaman handed down the punishment.

The convicts are Atier Rahman Talukdar, 28, and his mother Rahela Begum, 50, of Keshrail village in Boalmari upazila.

The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve one more year in jail.

According to the prosecution, Atier married Sumi Akter in 2010, and she had allegedly been subjected to torture by her husband and in-laws over family disputes since then.

At one stage, she was forced to take shelter at her father’s house.

However, Sumi’s family members later persuaded her and her husband to resolve the matter and sent her back to her in-laws’ house in Keshrail.

After returning there, she was subjected to abuse and torture again.

On May 11, 2011, Abujar Molla, imam of a local mosque, informed Sarwar Molla, Sumi’s brother, that she had died.

A case was filed with Boalmari Police Station in connection with the incident.

Police arrested Khalilur Rahman Talukdar, 55, and Rahela Begum from the spot, while Atier went into hiding.

After examining records and witnesses, the Faridpur District and Sessions Judge’s Court acquitted Khalilur Rahman as the allegations against him could not be proved.
