Posts, Telecommunications and ICT Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam on Saturday said the government is working sincerely to ensure internet access for all, stressing the need for coordinated efforts to provide uninterrupted and affordable services across the country.
“The government is working tirelessly to ensure internet access for all,†said the minister, while addressing a views-exchange titled ‘Internet for all’ at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office in Cox’s Bazar, said a PID handout here.
Prime Minister’s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad and Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Abdun Naser Khan were present as the special guest in the function.
The Minister called upon all the concerned to work in a coordinated way to reach uninterrupted internet services at affordable prices in every region of the country.
Citing that uninterrupted internet connectivity is very important to ensure the security of the coastal and fisheries sectors, he particularly emphasised the introduction of satellite-based internet services for cyclone warning, prevention of piracy and emergency communication systems for the fishermen working at sea.
Faqir Mahbub said the government is expanding modern digital services across the country, especially in tourism-dependent areas like Cox’s Bazar.
He cited that free Wi-Fi services have already been introduced at airports and railway stations.
Focusing on the importance of developing Cox’s Bazar into an international-standard tourist city, he said attracting both local and foreign investment is crucial. He said the government is working to simplify investment procedures, improve infrastructure and ensure easy access to related services in this regard.
The minister further said the government aims to bring technology to people’s doorsteps by expanding internet access up to the upazila level and implementing various initiatives to develop skills in freelancing and artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the event, Adviser Rehan Asif Asad said the government is working to improve the quality of telecommunication services and has taken steps to resolve existing problems, including delays in services provided by Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL).
He added that efforts will continue to expand free Wi-Fi services and improve mobile network coverage in Cox’s Bazar through phased investments and planning.
Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Abdul Mannan presided over the event, while members of civil society, stakeholders, media representatives and officials from various departments attended it and shared their views.
Later, the minister and the adviser held a separate meeting at the Hilltown Circuit House conference room with officials from BTCL, Teletalk Bangladesh Limited, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited, Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited and postal department employees.
Besides, the minister accompanied by the adviser inspected free Wi-Fi services installed at Cox’s Bazar Airport and railway station and reviewed the quality, speed and user experience of the services and provided necessary instructions to the concerned officials.
As part of the Prime Minister’s commitment, free Wi-Fi services have been launched at several important airports, railway stations and trains across the country, enabling both domestic and international passengers and tourists to enjoy seamless internet access, he said.
Adviser Rehan Asif Asad said the expansion of free Wi-Fi services is being carried out in phases throughout the country, and key locations in Cox’s Bazar, particularly the airport and railway station, have already been brought under the network.
He added that with a large number of local and foreign tourists visiting Cox’s Bazar every day, there are plans to gradually expand free Wi-Fi coverage to more tourist spots to ensure convenience, safety and digital connectivity.
