Law enforcers have arrested 20 more people in connection with the clashes with Awami League and banned Chhatra League activists over the NCP’s rally in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Wednesday. With this, the number of the arrestees climbed to 45, said Sajedur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station. He said the joint forces arrested 20 people from parts of the district from Thursday morning to Friday morning and later handed over to the Sadar Police Station. There were a few people seen on the streets as residents have been discouraged to go out unless it is an emergency. Moreover, business establishments remained closed amid the curfew and the number of vehicles plying was very thin. On the other hand, law enforcers, including Army and Rapid Action Battalion, were seen patrolling in the district to maintain law and order amid the curfew on Friday morning. Another person, who had sustained bullet injuries during clashes involving law enforcers, Awami League members, and banned Chhatra League activists in Gopalganj on Wednesday, died early Friday, raising the death toll from the incident to five. The deceased was identified as Ramjan Munshi, 32, son of Akbar Munshi of the Thanapara area under Gopalganj Sadar upazila. Ramjan, a rickshaw-puller, breathed his last around 2:45am while undergoing treatment in Ward No-101 of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the hospital police outpost. The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy, he added. In a series of nationwide joint operations led by the Bangladesh Army, a total of 328 people involved in various criminal activities have been detained between July 10-17. According to ISPR, the operations—conducted in coordination with other law enforcement agencies—targeted various locations across the country including Dhaka. Those apprehended include identified terrorists, illegal arms dealers, drug traffickers, smugglers, juvenile gang members, extortionists, illegal land occupiers, robbers, and illegal sand miners. Many were caught red-handed during the raids, ISPR said.During the operations, 8 illegal firearms, 49 rounds of ammunition, 16 cocktail bombs, various narcotics, locally-made weapons, stolen goods, mobile phones, and cash were also recovered from their possessions. The Inter Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) on Thursday called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies, urging them not to be misled by rumors or propaganda surrounding the recent unrest in Gopalganj. In a press release, ISPR said that on July 16, 2025, a group of unruly people carried out violent and terrorist activities in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila during a political rally organised as part of a broader march by a political party in the district. Several police personnel and journalists were initially injured during the clashes. The rally, held under the banner ‘March to Gopalganj’ as part of the NCP’s month-long nationwide programme titled ‘July March to Build the Nation’, was scheduled to begin at 11:00 am at the Gopalganj Municipal Open Stage. Chronology According to a police report on Gopalgonj violence, law enforcement had been deployed from early Wednesday morning to ensure security. The trouble began around 9:30 am when members of the banned Chhatra League, Awami League and its affiliated wings reportedly attacked on-duty police officers in Ulpur, Gopalganj Sadar, setting police vehicles ablaze and injuring one inspector and two others. At around 11:00 am, a the Kansur Bus Stand on the Gopalganj-Tekerhat road, 40–50 activists allegedly led by Md Omar Faruk Khan Ripon, Joint Convener of the banned Chhatra League’s Gopalganj Municipality unit, blocked the road by felling trees and lighting fires. The vehicle of the Gopalganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) was vandalised at the scene. Simultaneously, reports emerged of further blockades and violence. Further violence broke out at 2:15 pm in Satpara Bazar, where two more crude bombs were exploded and two motorcycles set on fire in the Satpara Bazar area of Gopalganj Sadar. Roads were blocked, and fires were lit at multiple locations. The rally concluded at around 2:50 pm, attended by around 200 people. However, the NCP motorcade of Nahid Islam and leaders, left the venue under police and army escort en route to Madaripur, was intercepted near the Gopalganj Launch Terminal at around 3:00 pm. The attackers used sharp weapons and pelted stones and bricks at law enforcers and NCP leaders. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has confiscated around Tk 400 crore worth of immovable assets belonging to former textiles and jute minister and former lawmaker from Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj), Golam Dastagir Gazi, in connection with allegations of illegal wealth accumulation through organised crime. According to CID sources, Golam Dastagir is accused of forcibly occupying land, taking commissions, forgery, fraud, hundi transactions, and involvement in under-invoicing and over-invoicing practices. These activities allegedly enabled him to acquire a vast amount of wealth. The confiscated assets include 69 land deeds in the Khaodun area under Rupganj Police Station in Narayanganj district, covering a total of 4,879.92 decimals of land. While the deed value of the property stands at Tk 16,52,84,000 (over Tk 16.5 crore), the current market value — including land, the premises of Gazi Tyres, and associated infrastructure — is estimated to be nearly Tk 400 crore. CID’s Financial Crime Unit found that the properties were acquired between 2015 and 2018. Acting on a petition filed by the investigating officer, the Senior Special Judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court issued the order for confiscation of property on July 8, says a press release from CID media wing on Wednesday. Investigations into money laundering are ongoing against Gazi, his business entities, and several members of an alleged criminal network linked to him. CID is also probing allegations of money laundering and illegal fund transfers abroad, with actions being taken under the Money Laundering Prevention Act. Authorities have already sent letters to various agencies to collect document-based evidence and further information in this regard.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered several firearms, including a foreign revolver, from a robbers’ hideout during an operation in the remote hilly forest of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district. However, the frontier force could not detain any criminal. According to a media release sent from the BGB-64 Battalion in the district on Wednesday, a BGB team launched the operation on Monday evening after being tipped-off about the presence of the robbers in the den in Rangikhali area under Hnila union. Not an inch of land will be left unprotected: BGB DG on fresh recruits Sensing the presence of BGB, the robbers managed to flee the scene, reads it. Later, the BGB personnel recovered one foreign revolver with 21 bullets, one long-barrel single-shot gun with three cartridges and five empty shells, one LG (locally made gun), one one-shooter pistol, 14 rifle rounds, one long machete and two machetes. A process was underway to hand over the arms and ammos to Teknaf Model Police Station, according to the release. Efforts were underway to arrest the accused.
