A 16-year-old student drowned and another went missing while bathing in the Meghna river at Chandpur's Mohonpur Parjatan area on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Shahriar Ishtiaq Shams, son of Ziadul Islam of Charhat village of Kushtia district. The missing student is Sushmito Saha, 15, son of Sudhanshu Saha of Kaitla area under Nabinagar Thana in Brahmanbaria district.
Both are students of class X at Narayanganj Cambrian School & College.
Md A. Qayyum, Principal of the college, said the students of Narayanganj Cambrian School and College, came to Mohonpur Parjatan Centre for a picnic by Prince Kamal-1 launch from Narayanganj in the morning.
Immediately after getting off the launch, students went for a bath in the river. At one stage, Shahriar and Sushmito started drowning due to the river’s strong current. Shahriar was rescued by his classmates around 1 pm but Sushmito remained missing.
Later, Shahriar was taken to Matlab Uttar Upazila Health Complex in critical condition where doctors declared him dead on arrival, said Shahidul Islam, deputy director of Chandpur (North) Fire Station.
On information, a naval diving team started rescue operations in and around the scene to recover the body of the missing student.
"Rescue operation suspended for tonight. Hopefully, we will recover the body tomorrow," he added.
