A 10-year-old girl died under mysterious circumstances in the capital's Jatrabari area on Monday, with doctors discovering ligature marks on her neck.
The deceased was identified as Riya, a Class-IV student and daughter of Rubel from the Salua Dighi area of Kapasia upazila in Gazipur district. The family currently resides in Shonir Akhra under Jatrabari Police Station.
The victim’s father claimed that Riya went to the bathroom at their house around 1:00pm, complaining of stomach pain, where she collapsed and lost consciousness.
Family members rescued her and rushed her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the attending physician declared her dead around 2:25pm.
"After examining her at the hospital, the doctor noticed marks on her neck and mentioned possible hanging," Rubel said, adding that the family is unaware whether the child attempted suicide.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said although the girl was brought in after allegedly falling in the bathroom, the injury marks on her neck have made the death suspicious. “The body has been kept in the hospital morgue for an autopsy, and the local police station has been informed.”
