Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard on Wednesday rescued 11 sailors from a sinking ship in the Bay of Bengal near Hatiya coast of Noakhali after they called for help on emergency number 999.
The ship was heading towards Jashore from Chattogram, said Assistant Inspector General (AIG-Media) of Police Headquarters Md Sohel Rana.
The sailors called the national emergency service 999 at around 10:30am and informed that their ship ‘Al Nur 2’ was sinking at the estuary of Meghna River and Bay of Bengal, seven nautical miles from Hatiya coast, he said.
Instantly, the operator informed the matter to Bhasanchar police outpost, Chattogram River Police and Coast Guard Station in Hatiya and requested them to start rescue operation immediately, the AIG (Media) said.
A team of Coast Guard Station Hatiya later rescued the sailors, he said.
