A case has been filed against two railway staffers in connection with a bus-train collision that left 12 people dead in Cumilla.
Injured bus passenger Shefali Akter lodged the case with Laksam Railway Police Station, naming gateman Helal Uddin and wayman Mehedi Hasan as accused.
Shefali is the aunt of deceased Sohel Rana and a resident of Laksam.
Officer-in-Charge of Laksam railway outpost Jasim Uddin confirmed the matter, and sadi, "The case was filed under section 304(a) of the Penal Code over death caused by negligence. The complainant, Shefali Akter, was also on board the bus at the time of the accident. "
Sohel Rana, an expatriate in Malaysia, had returned home to Chuadanga to celebrate Eid.
He was travelling to his aunt’s house in Laksam on Eid day when he was killed in the accident at the Paduar Bazar level crossing.
His wife and daughter were also injured and are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.
The accident occurred early on Eid morning when a Dhaka-bound train collided with a bus named ‘Mamun Special’ at the level crossing on the Dhaka-Chattogram railway line in the Paduar Bazar area.
At least eight others were seriously injured.
Following the incident, the two gatekeepers on duty at the crossing have been temporarily suspended.
Witnesses and injured passengers alleged that the gate was not closed in time as the train approached from Chattogram, leading to the deadly crash.
