Sirajganj, Oct 21 (UNB) – A mobile court here on Monday awarded 10 days’ imprisonment to each of 21 fishermen who were apprehended defying a government ban on catching mother hilsa at various points of the River Jamuna in Sirajganj.
Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md Anisur Rahman gave the order in the afternoon.
Those convicted are : Belal, 52, Fulchan, 50, Ilyas, 45, Monirul,22, Alamin,25, Saiful,40, and Robi Alam,25, of Sirajganj Sadar Upazila ; Hanif, 37, Shahadat, 31, Abul Kalam, 35, Mojnu, 50, Shahalam, 42, Shah Alam, 36, Sona Mia, 24, Ashraf, 55, Suruzzaman, 35, and Fotik, 32, of Belkuchi upazila; Khadem, 35, of Kalihati upazila of Tangail; and Shah Alam, 40, Hasen, 22 and Hossain, 33, of Tangail sadar upazila.
Milon Sarker, ‘Peshkar’ of the mobile court, informed that acting on a tip off, the mobile court conducted a drive that started early on Monday morning along different points of the Jamuna as it flows through Sirajganj .
By afternoon, 21 fishermen were detained for netting hilsa using current nets. Besides, while over 105,000 meters of current nets and 30 KGs of illegally caught hilsha had been seized.
The current nets were burnt while the recovered hilsa was distributed among local orphanages and madrasahs.
Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Anwar Hossain and Ansar Battalion members were present during the drive.
