Police have arrested three accused in the murder case of Polytechnic Institute student Al Muhtasim Saif while local residents staged a road blockade on Friday demanding the arrest of the main suspects.

The arrested accused are Shanto Hasan, 19, son of Abu Bakkar Siddique; Md Swadhin, 19, son of Lebu Mia; and Sajib Barman, 18, son of Gouro Barman, all residents of Digharpar area in Sherpur municipality.

Police arrested them in separate drives across different parts of the town on Friday. They were later produced before a court and sent to jail.

However, police have yet to arrest the main accused, identified as Naim Mia, Pappu, Swapan and Arman.

Demanding the immediate arrest of the prime accused and other suspects, local residents under the banners of “Sachetan Nagarik Samaj O Shikkharthibrindo” and “Sonar Bangla Jubo Samaj” blocked the Sherpur-Sreebordi road in the Dumduma-Kaliganj area for about an hour at afternoon.

Sohel Rana, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sherpur Sadar Police Station, rushed to the spot after receiving information about the demonstration. The protesters withdrew the blockade after the OC assured them that the accused would be brought to justice swiftly.

Saif,17, the only son of Abdul Malek of Dumduma-Kaliganj area in Sherpur municipality, was a  student of the Computer Technology Department at Sherpur Polytechnic Institute.

He was critically injured in an attack allegedly carried out by a juvenile gang over a trivial dispute while visiting the Tatolpur BM Road area of Sherpur on May 29. He later died while undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital on June 8.

OC Sohel Rana said police were making all-out efforts to arrest the remaining accused.
