Police on Thursday arrested three bKash workers in connection with an alleged attempt to rape a female student of Rabindra University, Sirajganj.

The arrestees are Tarek Rabbi, 36, an IT specialist at a bKash service point in Dakbanglapara of Shahjadpur municipality; Prahari Hossain Ali, 48, of Baziarpara; and Chayan Islam, 27, a bKash worker from Berakuchatia in Shahjadpur.

Shahjadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam said the victim, a third-year student of the Management Department of Rabindra University, has been living in a mess on the western side of Dakbanglapara for a long time.

On Monday night, one of her male friends visited her at the mess for a personal matter and left after staying there for some time.

Several people involved in monitoring the CCTV cameras at the nearby bKash service point noticed the visit and allegedly called the student on Wednesday morning, demanding Tk30,000 and threatening to circulate the CCTV footage if she failed to pay.

Later that night, the accused allegedly called her again to the bKash office on the fourth floor of a building owned by Biplab Kumar in Dakbanglapara and demanded that she hand over the gold chain she was wearing if she could not pay the money.

At one point, after the other accused allegedly left the room, Tarek Rabbi allegedly attempted to rape the student by force.

When she tried to leave the room, Prahari Samad allegedly sexually harassed her and took away her mobile phone. The accused also allegedly harassed her while she was fleeing the place.

The student later filed a case with the police station concerned.
